What Makes Transmission Problems the Worst?

I’ve had a tough year driving my 2014 SE Automatic Transmission car. The transmission has failed three times. Every time I shift up after stopping, the car jerks violently. Fixing it costs around $2000 each time. I’ve noticed this only happens during the hot months of July and August, especially on days with a lot of stop-and-go traffic. Are these the main factors that cause transmission issues in these cars?

Stop and go traffic is really bad for the transmission.

I never use more than a third of the throttle in first gear and two-thirds in second. Drive carefully, lol.

My 2015 has 240k miles with all original transmission parts. Knock on wood

I’ve been told both by people and a few Ford technicians to drive it very aggressively. I use it for Uber and drive like that, have done 35k miles since February, and it’s now at 156k miles. It’s still the original transmission, with one TCM replaced 10 years and 80k miles ago.

I’m the one with the long comment below. I agree with you. I’m a Lyft driver. The transmission handled stress well. Not sure how long the clutches will last with regular use. I’m thinking of choosing the power I want and holding the throttle there, whether light or heavy.

240k miles here and I agree with your points. Sometimes I push it hard too.

I should have explained more.

I drive it like a manual, which isn’t great in first and second gear.

  • 1/3 throttle in first gear
  • Foot almost off the gas during the upshift
  • 2/3 throttle in second gear
  • Foot almost off during the upshift
  • Full throttle in third gear
  • Back off to half throttle through all the upshifts into sixth gear
  • Now comfortably doing 75mph on the highway

From what I’ve read and experienced, stop-and-go driving is really tough on the transmission. Not sure if the hot summer weather made it worse.

Crawling through LA rush hour to a destination 90 minutes away was the final straw.

Great point. I’m a long-distance driver with all highway driving except a few miles on both sides, averaging 30k miles a year. Stop and go absolutely wears out the clutches and TCM.

I agree with very hot summer weather. I’ve been struggling hard this year. The second clutch is definitely about to fail. I might get one last winter out of mine, as the clutch seems to shudder less in cold weather, but I could be wrong :man_facepalming:

Stop and go traffic makes it worse but doesn’t cause it. The transmission design is poor. It can’t be fixed. The car is a money pit, as you’re finding out.

Stop and go traffic is terrible, but if you can shift it yourself in S mode, that helps. I usually do this and shift at 3200 RPM. I’ve never had heat-related issues, but it doesn’t get too bad here in Wisconsin.

Those transmissions are awful. Ford has many lawsuits for this reason. There are countless reports of transmission issues.

From my experience, mine failed at 50k miles, got it replaced, and then failed again at 55k miles. After much effort and research, I involved the state AG who contacted Ford. Ford corporate just laughed it off and said, ‘sue us.’

They know about the issues but don’t care. I sold mine for scrap to prevent others from facing the same problems.

I think you might have to just swap it with a manual…

A manual transmission, not a whole manual car, lol. If you have money for another car, I don’t think you’d be worrying about this.

At this point, I’m just going to have it fixed, sell it, and buy a Toyota that’s reliable enough.

The transmission works better in winter months (with colder temperatures).

That has been my experience as well.

Can you explain more about this? I’m just getting started on SEO.

Yes, in 2015, Google released a bad update called Rank Brain. It was new, and they misunderstood what people thought about it. They kept pushing the algorithm to rely more on AI, which doesn’t help users find the information they need.

I’m not saying AI can’t work in search engines, but Google’s approach is bad. We need to find or create something better because Google’s not providing accurate information anymore. Alphabet is just using Google’s reputation to make money. It’s really disappointing.

SEO is about user-focused content and good site structure. Look into tools like Moz, Ahrefs, or UsePulse; they can really help.
