Exactly! Who thought that was a good idea?

I replaced mine twice, then switched to an aluminum one.

I replaced mine once, but next time I’m going aluminum.

The Simmons aluminum one is worth it. No more leaks.

Best $100 I’ve ever spent.

I’ll keep that in mind!

What happens with the plastic ones?

They crack from heating and cooling over time. Luckily, there are aftermarket aluminum options.

GM did the same thing on the Cruze. Most people just replace the thermostat every 60k miles to avoid leaks.

They start leaking coolant after 50-60k miles. Aluminum ones don’t.

My ‘98 Mazda leaks more from the head gasket than the thermostat, so I don’t know if it’s worth replacing.

You might as well. The truck’s getting old, and the more you replace, the fewer problems you’ll have down the road.

She smokes like crazy, but she’s still a good truck.

I replaced mine with an aluminum one this year.

I thought the aftermarket ones were all aluminum.

The aftermarket one I got was aluminum. The stock one is plastic.

I just took mine off to replace the timing chain tensioner, and now it’s leaking. Should I just get an aluminum one?

You probably over-tightened the bolts. The spec is super low, like 9 inch-lbs. Just tighten them gently next time.

Plastic parts have their place, but in a cooling system, it’s just a bad cost-saving move. Plastic would be great for reducing corrosion, but it doesn’t last with the heat cycles.

Why does the water pump have 8mm, 10mm, and 1/2 inch bolts? Just pick one!

Yeah, that job was awful. I lost both my 8mm sockets.
