If I tune my Mustang, will it void my warranty? I’m mainly worried about the powertrain. Also, even if I revert the car back to the stock tune, wouldn’t Ford still be able to see that it was tuned before?
I got the Roush Power Pac Level 2, which includes a tune, and the dealer installed it for me. No issues with the warranty at all. I’d suggest going through a dealer and sticking to brands like Ford Racing, Roush, or Steeda. That’s just my two cents.
What state are you in? I spoke to a dealer recently, and they said they couldn’t install it due to emissions. I’m guessing it’s because of the axle-back exhaust.
I’m in Florida. If you’re in California, it might be due to the cold air intake and the tune. I think I saw on a website that it’s not available for sale in CA. The axle-back exhaust shouldn’t mess with emissions unless it’s too loud.
Cool, thanks for the info
When I bought my EcoBoost, the dealer told me mods will only void the warranty on the part you change. So, for example, an aftermarket exhaust will void the warranty for just the exhaust. I believe the same logic applies to tunes.
Yeah, that’s technically true because of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act. But, a tune can affect any repair or replacement involving the ECU, which covers most of the powertrain. A lot of dealers play it safe and might void warranties more aggressively than they’re allowed, assuming most people won’t take them to court over it. If you tune, just expect the dealer to refuse coverage on anything warranty-related, even if it’s unrelated.
Totally agree. They would have to prove the tune caused the issue, but in practice, it’s tough to prove a tune didn’t cause the problem. So they’ll just point fingers at the tune to avoid paying. If you’re set on tuning but want to keep your warranty, go with a Ford tune and have it installed by a Ford mechanic.
Just to clarify, the Ford Performance tunes won’t keep your original powertrain warranty. They offer their own 3-year/36k-mile warranty on the parts the tune affects, but that’s separate from the factory warranty. It’s a third-party warranty from Ford Performance, which is a different legal entity. The coverage is pretty close to the original warranty, but it’s still up to the dealer’s discretion. That’s why I’m waiting to supercharge my car and keep my original warranty for now.
Wow, I didn’t know that. I thought you’d keep the regular warranty. That’s a bummer, I was hoping to get the tune and not worry about voiding the warranty.
Isn’t there an official Ford tune that doesn’t void the warranty? A buddy of mine got one for his V6.
