Why won’t my 2006 Mustang go into reverse or drive?

Hey y’all, my 2006 Mustang won’t go into reverse or drive, it just revs. The weird thing is, it still goes into 1st, 2nd, and 3rd. This happened a few years back, and after a while, it just started working again. No strange noises, but when it shifts into 3rd, the car kinda jumps. This only seems to happen when it gets cold. Now, it won’t go back into drive or reverse at all. Any ideas?

Hey Dolph, How many miles are on your Mustang?

It’s got about 166,390 miles on it.

Gotcha. Everything else working fine, aside from the popping noise?

Yep, everything else seems normal.

Alright, just making sure. Let’s dive in.

Hey Dolph, sorry to hear you’re having issues with your Mustang. That’s super frustrating, I bet. Have you tried checking or doing anything to fix it yet?

Nah, I haven’t really done anything yet. I did have a tune-up about six months ago, though.

Hmm, okay. This sounds like it could be an issue with the transmission valve body or maybe just the fluid quality. Have you ever had the transmission fluid changed?

I honestly thought it might’ve been part of the tune-up, but I’m not really sure. There’s no dipstick to check it either.

Ah, gotcha. It might be worth calling the shop that did your tune-up and asking if they changed the transmission fluid. Sometimes, all it takes is a simple fluid and filter change to fix issues like this. :crossed_fingers:

How much does something like that usually cost?

Should be around $200, give or take.

Just make sure that whoever does the work adds a friction modifier to the system. With that many miles on the transmission, if the fluid hasn’t been changed before, flushing it could wash out some of the clutch material that’s keeping things moving smoothly, which could cause slippage. :grimacing:

I recommend using this product: BG Transmission Services. I’ve used it for years, and it’s great. Most shops will use it if you request it. :+1:

Got it. But if it turns out to be a valve body issue, I’m guessing that’ll be a lot more expensive?

Yeah, it would be. And unfortunately, there’s a chance you might even need a full transmission replacement. But since the issue is intermittent, I’d definitely recommend exploring these simpler fixes before assuming the worst. :crossed_fingers:
