I have a 2018 Ford Escape SEL premium, and it’s my first car. I wanted to ask, after I start my car, I let it warm up while I gather my things. I usually remote start it, but when I go outside, I notice that the exhaust is giving off a strong gas smell and smoke (or fog). This doesn’t seem normal, right? Also, my dashboard doesn’t show any warnings for the engine or oil, so this is really confusing.
Exhaust fumes can smell pretty bad, especially when the car starts in cold weather. But what you’re describing could mean a big engine problem, like coolant leaking into the cylinders where the fuel burns. What engine do you have? This issue mostly affects the 1.6L engine, and a little bit the 2.0L engine. The 2.5L engine usually doesn’t have this problem. You should check your coolant levels. Is it normal or low?
@Ember
I have the 1.5L engine. I don’t think it’s a coolant issue since no light came on for that, but I’ll check the levels to be sure.
