Why does my Explorer lose power out of nowhere… anyone else?

Got a 2020 Explorer ST back in December.

I’m 35(f) and don’t know much about cars, so forgive me if I don’t use the right words. Just trying to get some ideas to pass on to my husband.

Three times now, while driving on the freeway at 70-80 mph, the car just loses all power like it bogs down. I press the gas all the way, and it takes about 5-7 seconds to respond. Feels like forever when cars are flying up behind me.

First time it happened, I was going uphill, so I thought maybe that was the reason. But then it happened on a slight downhill and again on a flat road.

Is this a known issue with the ST? Appreciate any help!

Had the same thing happen with both of my 2020 Explorer STs. Usually happens after driving over 500 miles, especially when driving a little aggressively. Took it in for service, but they found nothing since no codes were generated. They said they’d need to replicate it, which means driving hundreds of miles.

@Ava
Yeah, that’s the issue… no warning lights or anything, so I’m guessing no codes are being stored.

Might not be the same, but I had an ‘85 Thunderbird that did this. Turned out to be the Emission Control Module (not sure if STs even have this anymore). Basically, a tiny computer that was failing due to heat. Only fix was replacing it.

Do any warning lights pop up when this happens?

Nope, nothing at all.

I’ve got a 2021 XLT, and this has happened to me a bunch of times. Took it in, but no codes. It’s kinda scary.

Same here. 2021 Limited, had the dealership check it out, no codes. They replaced an injector, which helped for a bit, but then it started happening again. Still no idea what’s causing it.

Yeah, super scary when it happens on the freeway.

Any pattern to when it happens? Like wet roads or high humidity?

Nope, I live in a mild climate. Nothing extreme happens here.

Could be bad fuel. Some older gas station tanks get contaminated.

Could be fuel filter, dirty air filter, or mass airflow sensor. So many possibilities. Try getting it scanned for codes at an auto parts store.

We actually have a code reader at home, but it’s not pulling anything. No lights, no warnings… like the car doesn’t even realize it’s happening.

This has happened twice to my wife and once to me in our 2020 Explorer Limited. No codes either. I honestly want to get rid of the car… way too dangerous, especially when it happens at high speeds.

If it’s a clogged fuel filter, the computer won’t catch it. Sometimes it might throw a vague code, but not always. A dirty fuel filter can randomly block fuel and cause hesitation like this. Might be worth swapping it out.

@Lee
I’ll give that a try, thanks.

What mode are you in when this happens? Eco, normal, or sport?

Haha, nice username. But nope, just normal mode. :laughing:

Try sport mode next time. Might help.
