What are the best Mustang years and models for long-term reliability? I’m currently shopping for a Mustang and would like to know which years and models are known for their durability and reliability, ideally with low maintenance costs. I’m looking for a car that will last with regular upkeep and isn’t driven aggressively, just the occasional burst of speed. My budget is $25,000, and I’d appreciate any advice you can offer.
Any Mustang equipped with the 4.6 engine is almost certain to reach 200,000 miles if you keep up with regular maintenance and use high-quality fuel. I have a '96 GT with 243,000 miles and a '99 Expedition (also with a 4.6) that has 296,000 miles.
I’ve had a similar experience. I’ve been driving them for over 20 years without any issues, but I make sure to stay proactive with maintenance.
Just be careful not to over-tighten the spark plugs or let anyone who thinks a torque wrench isn’t necessary handle them. If you over-tighten, you risk stripping the threads and causing them to blow out. Also, make sure to keep the oil levels topped up at all times.
I have a 98 GT, and the odometer stopped working at 184k miles, so I’m guessing it’s probably between 200k and 250k now. The car runs great overall. Occasionally, a few issues come up, but nothing that some strong language and a few hand tools can’t fix.
15-17 GT Gen 2 Coyote and 6R80 can handle the daily abuse and even if you ever decide to mod it they have proven the most reliable motor/trans combo. Going on 20K miles of 850whp on my early 16 model, 65k total miles, Stock Trans and only OPG/CS for motor. No signs of slowing down. Knock on wood
2014 Mustang GT would be my vote. I have a 2016 and it has been great, but the IRS is weaker than the solid rear axle of a 2014. The 2016 is a better car otherwise. I wouldn’t get a 2018 or later, as the fuel injection system is overly complicated. Older cars may have issues from sitting, so that is a variable that rules out 4.6 cars for absolute reliability.
My other consideration would be that a new and under warranty car COULD have lower maintenance costs, as people do abuse Mustangs. If you wait until winter, you might be able to get a 2022/2023 Ecoboost for $25,000 or close to it, as prices for mustangs drop in the winter. Turbos without their own oil system do cause oil to wear out sooner, but you would save on gas.
You can save considerably on maintenance by learning to DIY with things like oil changes, air filters, cabin air filters, etc. These are easy if you’re confident/competent. Just don’t increase the cost of maintenance in the process by buying a bunch of tools and equipment you don’t need. Used tools are fine too.
