I’m thinking about buying a new or used F150 Super Crew (2019 or newer). I’m wondering which engine and transmission is better: the 3.5L V6 EcoBoost or the 5.0L V8? I usually drive fast, around 76-80 mph on highways. Does anyone have real examples of the gas mileage they get?
Both the 3.5 and 5.0 engines are strong. The 3.5 has a camshaft issue, and the 5.0 can burn oil, but both perform well at high speeds and have great passing power.
Both the 3.5 and 5.0 engines are good options. The 3.5 engine performs well but can have a cam phaser rattle problem. The 5.0 engine is also strong but might use up oil. Since you drive fast, both engines will give you good performance and make it easy to pass other cars at 80+ mph.
You’ll hear a lot of different opinions—everyone thinks the engine in their F-150 is the best. I don’t have anything against the EcoBoost, but I really love my 5.0L V8.
They’re all great and good at different things. Just test drive each one and pick the one you like. If you tow heavy, go for the 3.5.
I’m getting 19.9 mpg in my '23 5.0 FX4 with the 3.73 ratio. I use the throttle a bit but mostly cruise at 65-75 mph.
If you’re not towing, the 2.7 is the best engine for fuel efficiency and reliability.
I love my 2017 5.0 XLT, but there’s a big difference between the 2015-2017 5.0 engines and the 2018 and newer ones. Also, 2017 was the last year with the 6-speed transmission—after that, they all have 10-speed transmissions.
If I were buying now, I’d go for either the 5.0 or the 2.7 engine. Both are excellent.
