Thinking about adding Apple Car Play to my 2016 XLT ... Any suggestions?

Hello everyone, I’m looking to install an Apple Car Play device in my 2016 XLT by replacing the original radio. I have an Apple CarPlay device but would like it to be installed in the car.

You can buy an adapter and install a double din radio. You can also buy a “Tesla style” tablet radio and install that. You can upgrade this to sync 3 for around a thousand dollars.

Don’t buy a Tesla style tablet radio. There are many “it worked for a month and now it’s broken” posts on this forum.

Yeah, you’d have to check them carefully. Even then, it’s still not worth the cost. Double din is the better choice.

Just suggesting the double din option as well. You can get a good unit for around $100 that supports CarPlay.

You’ll need a wiring harness to avoid cutting the original radio plug and a dash mounting kit specific to your year and model. Any system you choose should work fine. It’s definitely possible.

all things sync

Crutchfield.com will help you find what fits. They sell all the needed adapters at a discount when you buy the radio from them.

Check out 4dtech.com and you might be able to get a stock-looking upgrade in the dash.

They’ve been around for a while and have great customer service. I can’t speak on quality, but they were one of the first companies doing Sync upgrades even before CarPlay was available.

I upgraded my Sync 2 infotainment system on my 2015 Ford Explorer that did not support Apple CarPlay or Android Auto to Sync 3 myself. I watched a few tutorials and it was very easy.

This is from someone who has never modified or worked on their cars before, so it should show how easy it is.

Let me know how it goes! I have a 2017 Ford Explorer and it was very difficult! I had to buy a whole new bezel so the screen would fit… but with the new bezel, the AC buttons stopped working, so I had to get an adapter… something like iDatalink. Two years with the radio and everything works great, but we never got the front air conditioning controls to work. We’re looking at spending $1600 for Sync 3 to have everything set up for the truck and see if that fixes it.

I got one on eBay for $600 and it worked perfectly for adding CarPlay
