I’m thinking of trading my 2018 Ford Platinum Expedition with 88,000 miles for a 2021 BMW X7 with the M package. The reason I’m considering this is because of the high mileage and the fact that my Expedition needs a $1200 repair due to uneven brake caliper wear. Should I keep the Expedition until it hits 100,000 miles or go ahead and trade it for the BMW? Anyone know anything about the BMW X7?
If you’re trading in your Ford just for a $1200 repair bill, you might be trading in your X7 much more often. Haha, just kidding! I own a 2018 Platinum with 50k miles, so I can’t speak to how well it holds up beyond 100k miles, but these vehicles are built to last 200-300k miles. I haven’t had direct experience with the BMW X7, but the older BMWs I’ve owned had expensive lights to fix (like $500 and $1500). My sister leases a Mercedes GL550 for this reason. Germans make great cars, but they’re pretty complex, and when something breaks, repairs are pricey. I would only consider a BMW X7 if I had a good mechanic specializing in European cars and didn’t mind spending money. Once the warranty is gone, repairs can get expensive. It really depends on what you’re looking for in your next car and how long you plan to keep it. If you can afford a new car every 3-5 years, the BMW will only cost you in terms of price and depreciation. Personally, I’d feel more comfortable owning a Ford with over 100k miles than a BMW at that same age.
The BMW is definitely more fun to drive, but it eats up tires quickly. Most people buy an Expedition because they need to haul a lot of people or tow heavy things. The Expedition does both really well, but it’s a bit like a boat to drive.
@Collins
I’ve heard that about the tires! I made sure to add a tire repair/wheel repair replacement package for three grand since the rims cost about $1500 each, and my wife tends to scrape the curbs a lot.
How many miles are on the X7? I’ve owned a BMW M vehicle, and I wouldn’t consider anything over 50k miles.

I agree. The maintenance on a BMW with higher mileage will make you wish you’d just paid the $1200 for brake work on the Expedition.

It’s a 2021 X7 with 26k miles, Certified Pre-Owned, for $55k. Here’s the link to the listing.
If someone is telling you that your caliper is wearing unevenly, you might want to find a more honest shop to take your car to.
I’m not familiar with the X7, but I can tell you from personal experience (I owned a 530i and a BMW motorcycle) that BMWs are really expensive to maintain. You’ll probably face more issues down the road, and they’ll likely cost you more in the long run than the Expedition. There’s a reason why most people trade in their BMWs after 4 or 5 years. I would imagine the BMW is more fuel-efficient since it’s smaller, but that’s about it.
@Kody
I’m going to keep the Expedition! Thanks for all the advice.
