Should I Risk It With a 2018 Expedition?

I’ve been eyeing an Expedition for a while, and recently I’ve been seriously looking at 2020s or newer. However, I came across one at our family dealer," who’s taken care of all our Ford vehicles for 20+ years, so I trust them. But, I found some old reviews for the 2018 model, and it seems like people think the transmission might need a rebuild soon and that there are other issues. So, I’m asking myself, should I take the risk and buy it with an extended warranty, or should I keep looking for a newer one like I originally wanted?

I know I said I wanted 2020s or newer, but this one caught my attention. If most people say the 2018s are bad, I’ll just move on.

Thanks for any advice!

I have a 2019 and I love it. I get around 20 mpg on long trips, but it’s only 22 when I drive at 55 mph. The truck is comfortable going 80 though.

I also have a 2019 and got 22 mpg on two trips from Texas to Wyoming. I was cruising at over 75 mph.

@Fordlady
I think the roof rack might be hurting my fuel efficiency a bit.

I didn’t have anything on my roof for my long trips, so that could be the reason for the difference.

@Fordlady
Someone else told me they saw better mpg without the roof rack, so I might try that on my next trip. I do like the look of the crossbars though.

Lucky you! I’d be shocked if I could get 14.4 mpg in my 2008.

@Tate
It’s crazy how they calculate mpg. I’ve only seen 20 mpg a couple of times, and usually it’s around 17-18 mpg.

I have a 2019 and I’m generally happy with it, but if it weren’t for the Ford Extended Warranty, I’d be in serious debt. My transmission failed at 60k miles—actually, it was the torque converter, but Ford ended up replacing the whole transmission because of parts shortages. I think all the coolant lines were replaced, I had the full phaser job done, and the passenger wheel bearings were replaced too. It’s mainly a mall cruiser," so I wasn’t expecting the transmission issue.

@Melanie
Same story here. I bought my 2018 with 65k miles, and in the last 30,000 miles I’ve had to replace the cam phasers (covered by the extended warranty), the front driver’s wheel bearing, and all the coolant lines. The worst part is, my warranty is about to expire with less than 5,000 miles left on it. My 2018 Platinum that I bought for $55,000 is now worth less than $30,000.

@Zuri
You should contact Ford directly about an extended protection plan. Mine was $1900 and covers me until 2027, or 100,000 miles. The dealer wanted way more for the same coverage, but going directly through Ford lets you pay monthly. The coolant lines are a nightmare because of the cam phaser jobs; those lines aren’t meant to be taken off and put back.

@Melanie
It looks like you’re close to 95k miles now. I’d expect a transmission rebuild in the next 30k miles, to be honest.

You might want to stick to a 2015-2017 or 2020 and newer. The 2018 and 2019 models are known for having serious issues.

Not sure if that’s totally accurate. Didn’t the transmissions and cam phasers only get fixed after 2022?

@Loveness
I think the 2020 models had updated cam phasers, at least.

@Loveness
I’ve heard that the late 2020 batches had fixes for the transmission issues.

Yeah, mid-August 2022 build dates and beyond had the updated CDF drum.

If you’re looking at a 2018-2020, make sure you have a warranty. Otherwise, you’ll spend a lot fixing everything that breaks.

It’s stressful to read these posts sometimes. Just wanted to say that my 2020 XLT has 65k miles with no issues at all. Zero problems. We take care of it, and I’m really happy with it. I’m even considering a Lincoln Navigator next time.

I love the look and space of the Expeditions, but unfortunately, their drivetrains are terrible. OP, you might want to think about looking at something else. I’ve been looking into Nissan Armadas recently. The drivetrain is more reliable, though the Armada isn’t as roomy as an Expedition.
