Hey everyone, I’m looking at a 2019 Edge ST with 78k miles. I’m curious about how reliable these cars are as they get older. How long can they last? Is it worth $20k? Also, how’s the sound system? Thanks for any advice!
I bought a 2019 Edge ST last December with 119,000 km (about 74,000 miles). After a lot of research, I found out the Ford 2.7L engine is really solid. The one I got was super well-maintained by the previous owner—only one owner, and they even used seat covers from day one.
My thoughts so far: I’ve owned a few sporty cars, including a 2013 Mustang GT Convertible. The Edge ST isn’t crazy fast, but it’s quicker than it feels. The sound insulation is great, so it doesn’t feel like you’re speeding up as much as you are. The 2.7L engine handles the weight of the car well, and it’s surprisingly good at cornering for its size. Fuel economy in the city during winter isn’t great, but that’s normal here when it’s cold.
The sound system is awesome and easy to adjust. I updated the Sync 3 system to the latest version, including maps. The only downside is Android Auto/CarPlay is wired, but I got a cheap dongle from Amazon to make it wireless.
Overall, it’s been a great purchase. My wife and two teenage sons love it too. It’s a perfect daily driver for someone who wants performance but also needs space for the family.
@Aubrey
Thanks for the detailed reply! Funny enough, my summer car is also a Mustang. I’m looking for a good winter car that’s family-friendly since my son was born three months ago. I was considering an Explorer ST, but $35k for a car with 70k miles felt too steep. Then I found the Edge ST. I saw a Performance Blue one with black rims, and the interior with the seats, sound system, and panoramic roof won me over. But I wanted to check how reliable it is since looks aren’t everything.
I’ve heard the transmission might be a weak point. Have you had any issues with it?
@Ellison
I agree with the other comment. I have a 2019 in Performance Blue, and it’s been great. Mine was well-maintained with all the receipts.
The transmission can feel a bit rough, especially between 2nd and 3rd gear. Ford made those gears really close, which can make shifts feel awkward. Tunes can help, and Ford can remap it to match later models where they removed one gear in software.
If you use the paddles, shifting from 1st to 2nd is fine, but 2nd to 3rd feels a bit off. 3rd to 4th is smooth again. Check out TheStraightPipes review for more on that.
For reference, mine had about 80k miles, and I paid around $23k last year.
@Ellison
No transmission issues so far, but my drives are slow and careful because of winter roads. The previous owner had the transmission fluid changed about 20k miles ago, which helps.
Mine’s also Performance Blue with black rims. It’s such a sharp look.
It’s definitely worth it. I have a 2019 ST in blue, now at 72k miles. It’s been an amazing car. Mine’s tuned, pushing over 400hp and 400 ft-lb of torque. It’s a real sleeper.

The sound system is really good. The sub vibrates a little sometimes, but it’s not a big deal. Sync 3 is still great, and I actually prefer the smaller screen over the newer tablet-style ones.
@Sterling
Totally agree about the 8-inch screen. It’s the right size—not too big, not too small.

Performance Blue is such an amazing color. Thanks for the info!
I’m curious about this too. Anyone else have experience?
The Edge ST is pretty reliable if you keep up with maintenance. Ford recommends changing the transmission fluid every 25k miles and the PTU/RTU fluids every 20-30k miles. That’s more frequent than some other cars, but it’s worth it. We love our 2019 ST—just something to keep in mind.
I had a 2016 Sport and put 150k miles on it. Loved it until I wrecked it last Memorial Day. Now I have a 2022 ST with 9k miles. No issues with either. I run 93 octane and use Amsoil in all fluids except the engine, where I use Royal Purple. I get about 27 mpg in the summer. The 6-speed in the 2016 was perfect, and the 7-speed in the 2022 is better than the 8-speeds but not as smooth as the 6. They don’t break—they just like it when you’re on the gas. If it shifts at low speed, it might clunk a bit, but that’s normal. Buy one—you won’t regret it. It’s the perfect daily driver.
Blue with black rims is such a great combo!
I have a 2019 Edge SEL with a turbo, and I’d suggest avoiding it. I had coolant intrusion issues and had to replace the entire engine out of pocket. The turbo is also having problems, and my car only has 66k miles. I’ve always done maintenance early, and I drive carefully since it’s a family car. Check the NHTSA website—there are a lot of complaints about coolant intrusion and transmission issues. Even the newer models (2019+) have these problems. I’d recommend looking at a Honda or Toyota instead.
@Remi
The 2.7L in the ST and Sport doesn’t have coolant intrusion issues.
@Remi
That’s a lot of info for something he didn’t even ask about lol.
