How reliable is the 2002 Mustang GT?

I don’t know a lot about these cars, but I’m looking for a fun weekend RWD manual, and this one seems to check the boxes. I’m not really after something fast, just something enjoyable to drive. It’s between this and a 2007 G35 coupe with 80k miles. Any thoughts?

It’s not super fast stock, but it’s an absolute blast to drive and can handle daily thrashing like few other cars.

$10,000 for a 22-year-old car, no matter the economy, is overpriced.

Haha, I agree. I’m not planning to pay the asking price. Just curious about the platform itself!

If it’s not rusted out and in decent shape, he’ll get at least $7,500, especially in Massachusetts. Finding anything older than 8 years without rust around here is tough.

I disagree. I see beat-up 240SXs that are 30 years old going for that kind of price regularly.

Doesn’t mean it’s a smart buy.

It’s a nice car. I love the way they look! Not too far from me either, lol. They aren’t super fast, but the V8 sounds great. I’d take this over a G35 any day, but that’s just me.

Yeah, I’m not really chasing speed anymore, just something fun to drive. Honestly, anything manual is a blast for me!

These have enough torque to feel quick off the line, but they run out of steam up top. You could throw in some new gears to give it better acceleration.

I’ve got a 2000 GT, super fun car, and I’m keeping it forever. People often think mods will increase the value, but they usually don’t match what you spend. You might put $20k into mods and only add a few grand in value. That said, it’s a great car, just don’t overpay. I got mine for $3k back in 2019.

What would you say is a fair price for the one I’m looking at?

Fair price and asking price are two different things here. Stock models are going for about $5k, and with the mods, maybe $6.5-7k tops.

It really depends on how you feel about the mods and the condition of the interior. Stock ones with that mileage are more like $6k. I sold my 2003 with 100k miles and a rough paint job for $6k earlier this year. It was stock aside from a CAI and Steeda exhaust. If the mods are done well, $9k is fair for the current market. I’d try to talk them down to $8,500. People quoting $5-7k haven’t kept up with the market for New Edge GTs recently. Prices from 2019 are irrelevant now.
