Hey everyone… just got a 2020 Ranger XLT 4x4 this week and I’ve got a question about towing. I’m trying to figure out how much I can safely tow. The truck doesn’t have a factory hitch, just the bumper mount, so I’m looking to add a Class 3 hitch like this one:
The hitch says it’s rated up to 6,000 lbs, and the door sticker shows a GVWR of 6050 lbs. So I’m wondering… if I don’t have the tow package, but use this aftermarket hitch, can I pull up to 6,000 lbs? Or am I missing something important here? This is my first truck, so I’m still learning… planning for a future move and don’t want to mess up.
For the 2020 Ford Ranger, you can tow up to 3,500 lbs without the tow package, but if you have the tow package, it goes up to 7,500 lbs. I have a 2022 Tremor with the tow package, rated for 7,500 lbs, though I wouldn’t max that out but wouldn’t mind towing around 5,000 lbs.

Read the manual. I don’t get why people ask random folks on a forum when the answer’s sitting in the book in the glove box.
I did read it… but the manual doesn’t cover the specific hitch and trailer setup I’m thinking about. I just don’t want to make a wrong decision and put anyone at risk, so I’m asking for advice from others who know more. If you’re not interested, you can just keep scrolling.
@London
Sure, it costs nothing to scroll, but it also costs nothing to tell you to check reliable sources instead of random opinions. If you’re worried about safety, you should be checking the manual. The manual tells you how much you can tow with and without trailer brakes and what your hitch is rated for. Use the lowest number as your limit. Simple and safe.
@Lana
I’ve read the manual, like I said before. I’m just looking for input on what could be missed or any tips on the specific combo of hitch and trailer I’m thinking about using. It’s a public forum… do you really get this upset every time someone asks a question?

The manual clearly states the tongue weight and towing capacity of the bumper ball. You’d know that if you read it.
Yes, it does, but I’m not asking about towing with the bumper ball. I’m talking about a different setup, and thankfully, some people here are helpful and willing to share what they know. Chill out.
It looks like without the tow package, the max is 3,500 lbs. The tow package includes a hitch, the wiring, and some transmission settings for tow mode. I’ve got a ‘19 with the tow package, and I’ve pulled around 5,500 lbs, but it’s definitely a bit of a struggle, and trailer brakes are a must.
@Carla
Thanks, that’s helpful! I’ve got a 4-pin harness under the bumper, but no hitch. I do have a tow mode button near the shifter though… does that mean I have part of the towing package?

You can buy a hitch rated for 7,500 lbs or more, but the actual limit will be the lower of the hitch rating or the vehicle’s rating. I use a Reese hitch on my Ranger and tow a 6,300 lbs trailer with no problems. Just be aware of trailer brake requirements if you’re pulling heavy loads. Surge brakes or electronic brake controllers are your options.
@johnstone
Thanks! I didn’t realize you could get hitches rated that high. Here’s what I’m planning to tow: U-Haul Trailer — it’s got a 4-pin connector, so I’m guessing no brakes. Max weight is 4,400 lbs, so looks like either hitch would be fine.
@London
Looks like that trailer has surge brakes according to the site. They’re not the best, so make sure you keep plenty of stopping distance. My boat trailer has surge brakes too, and it does take some getting used to.
Check out ranger5g.com… they’ve got a whole section for towing with Rangers. The 2.3 engine is strong and will handle towing well with the right setup.

I remember seeing TFL pull a big load with a Ranger from Nebraska to Denver… it was over the limit but still did fine.
Your towing capacity depends on your hitch rating, up to 7,500 lbs, but make sure you’re following your local laws regarding trailer brakes. I’ve towed some heavy stuff like scrap iron and air compressors with no trouble.
