How Can I Install a 5.0 Engine in a 2000 Mustang with a 3.9 Motor?

Hey, can I put a 5.0 in my 2000 Mustang? It’s got a 3.9 motor and automatic transmission.

Anything else the mechanic should know before I connect you? He’ll be able to help you out.

Hey @Unclewaffl3s , nice to meet you. You can definitely swap in a 5.0 for your 2000 Mustang. Are you thinking of the newer Coyote 5.0 engine?

Hold on mech, a Coyote? Is it possible with my 3.9 auto?

What year of the 5.0 engine are you considering? The Coyote engine is from 2011 and up.
It’s definitely possible and not too difficult.

Any 5.0 that would fit without too many hassles?

I’d go with the newer 5.0 engine. It’s powerful and reliable for the cost.

Can I use the same transmission?

No, you’ll need something like the 4R70W to handle the extra torque. Your current transmission might not hold up.

Got it. What about wiring, computer, and all that?

And the rear differential?

You’ll need a conversion harness for the new setup. The rear differential might last a bit but consider upgrading it soon.
