Ford recalls 2020-2024 Escapes and 2021-2024 Corsairs… Battery issues and possible risks?

Ford is recalling some 2020-2024 Escapes and 2021-2024 Corsair vehicles due to a defect in the high-voltage battery cells. This could lead to an internal short circuit and battery failure. If anyone owns one of these vehicles, have you had any issues? Thoughts?

So an internal short circuit means there’s a fire risk? This is worrying. Anyone know if these packs are from LG Chem? Already keeping an eye out for crankshaft issues from an earlier recall. Getting frustrated with Ford here.

@Teddy
Same here. I thought this platform was reliable, but it feels like I got the worst-assembled car. I haven’t had major issues yet, but there’s a pile of recalls I can’t address since the dealers are backlogged for months. I might switch brands next time.

@Braxton
I just bought a Kia Sorento PHEV. My 2023 Ford PHEV is being reviewed under the lemon law. It had 12-volt battery issues and spent over a month in the shop. FordPass kept saying, ‘Plug in to maintain 12v battery.’

@madisonwilson
I’ve seen that message too when I use a Level 1 charger. What about you?

I get it constantly. Driving, parked, doesn’t matter. I’ve gone through three 12-volt batteries in 6,000 miles. Ford had my car for a month trying to fix it.

@Teddy
I read that the Euro Escapes use Samsung batteries. Not sure about the US models.

@Teddy
The F-150 Lightning uses LG Chem batteries, I think. But maybe the Escape uses something like HGK?

@Teddy
I know how you feel. It’s frustrating dealing with this stuff.

Quick question… Does FordPass notify us about this recall, or are we supposed to figure it out ourselves?

Not sure, but you can check your VIN on the recall website.

Here’s a placeholder image, but seriously, check the recall site with your VIN to be sure.

The affected vehicles are plug-in hybrid models with 2.5-liter four-cylinder engines assembled between July 2019 and April 2024.

Ford says only about 1% of PHEV Escapes are affected—so around 200 cars out of 20,000.

Does this recall only apply to Escapes with Samsung battery cells? I think US Escapes use SK cells. My US 2022 PHEV doesn’t show up in the NHTSA recall search.

Mine doesn’t show up either. Fingers crossed we’re not affected.

I haven’t had any issues so far. Honestly, I’m more worried about the problems dealerships might create while fixing these recalls.

That seems like a bit of an overgeneralisation. Are there any examples of dealerships causing issues while handling recalls? Or is this just an isolated experience?

What’s the actual fix for this?

Dealers will update the battery energy control module software and replace the high-voltage battery pack if needed. It’s free of charge, according to the recall notice.
