Ford Adaptive Headlights… can they be hacked?

I absolutely love the adaptive headlights on my truck! Watching them in action at night is like a light show. I once saw them trying to adjust on the back of a van, and they couldn’t find a window to project under—it was so entertaining!

But here’s my issue: they don’t block light for oncoming traffic, and I constantly get flashed by other drivers with their high beams. I thought maybe this was an early version of the feature and it would improve over time, but apparently, that’s not the case.

Now I’ve learned that you can enable better functionality by connecting your truck to a laptop and using something like FORScan to tweak the settings. It’s not as simple as flipping a switch in the menu—it involves changing lines of code! I just found a video on it, and now I’m thinking about giving it a try. Looks like I’ll need to buy an extra cable though.

Anyone else done this? Is it worth the hassle?

I enabled Matrix headlights on my XLT using FORScan, and they work great. They dim specific sections for oncoming traffic. Maybe your camera isn’t calibrated correctly, or you missed a setting in FORScan. That said, some people will still flash you no matter what, just because these LED lights are so bright.

I’m new to this whole FORScan thing. What other tweaks have you made with it?

One of the best changes I made was removing the ‘FULL VIEW NOT AVAILABLE’ box from the rear camera. I also enabled glare-free headlights, increased the heated steering wheel temperature, bumped up the turn signal flashes to six, disabled the seatbelt chime, and turned off the double honk when exiting the truck. Most of these require FORScan, but the last two can be done without it.

@Lauren
How do you disable the seatbelt chime without FORScan?

Turn the truck to accessory mode and wait for the seatbelt light to go off. Then buckle and unbuckle three times, ending with unbuckled. The seatbelt light will start flashing. Buckle and unbuckle once more, and it should be disabled.

@Lauren
Does this work for the back seat too? That chime goes off even when no one is sitting there.

You have to do it from each seat individually. Disabling it in one seat won’t affect the others.

@Lauren
Can I disable the chime for when I don’t wear a seatbelt at all?

Wait… you can increase the heated steering wheel temperature? Mine is lukewarm at best. How do you do that?

Yes, with FORScan and an OBDII cable. The default temp is 35°C, but you can increase it to 39°C by editing the hexadecimal code. Here’s a guide: https://www.f150lightningforum.com/forum/threads/f150-lightning-forscan-thread-version-2.23634/

@Lauren
Thanks! Any recommendations on the best place to get the software and adapters?

Start here: https://www.f150lightningforum.com/forum/threads/ecu-module-programming-guide-using-fdrs.8249/. It’s a lot of reading, but once you have the basics, you’ll be set. You’ll need a Windows laptop, a Mongoose cable, and a battery tender for long updates.

I haven’t done much beyond enabling Matrix headlights and disabling the seatbelt chime for a while (I ended up turning it back on).

@Elsa
That seatbelt chime is intense. Thanks for sharing!

Great post! I’ve been meaning to try this. I’m surprised your headlights don’t block light for oncoming traffic. In videos I’ve seen, the Matrix headlights do this perfectly.

It seems like this feature is built into the system but disabled by default. I guess Ford hasn’t turned it on for all users yet.

@Shane
Matrix headlights weren’t legal in the U.S. until 2022. Ford hasn’t updated the software to enable them in older vehicles, but in Canada, they come activated by default.

Are these headlights enabled by default on higher trims like the Lariat?

No, they’re not enabled on any trim by default in the U.S. You can use FORScan to turn them on, though.
