Ecoboost Issues, Mechanics Speaking Out?

Feels like I’m talking to a group that’s already been through the nightmare because, well, I’ve been there too. My 2017 Escape Titanium hit 59k miles and boom—coolant intrusion disaster. It’s wild that we’re in 2024, and now this news article acts like it’s breaking some big story. People have been screaming about this for years, even with multiple class action lawsuits. Props to the writer for at least sharing the warning without trying to keep it hidden.
Here’s the link with the article and a TikTok warning:

This article gets so many things wrong. “Compresses exhaust gases back into the engine”—uh, no. That’s not how turbos work.

What about the part where it says “the engines also inject only the necessary amount of fuel”? Sounds off too.

Maybe this will finally get some attention. A recall would be a lifesaver for a lot of us!

@Freya
You did good, bot.

@Freya
Fixed the link. Appreciate the heads-up.

I just try to keep it simple: gentle on the gas, oil changes every 3k miles, trans fluid every 15k, and replace stuff as it fails. My last headache was the EVAP system messing up starts after refueling. I keep her on a battery tender in the cold and clean when possible.

So far, at 80k with a few hiccups, she’s still going. Hopefully, the coolant stays where it should.

@Phoenix
Wait, I’m not the only one with winter battery struggles? Mine acts up too. Sometimes my power steering would bug out in the sub-zero weather, so now I use a tender whenever I can.

Yeah, I’m in the Pacific Northwest. If it’s warm, no trouble. But come winter, even with a big new AGM battery, it still drains. Only when it’s cold though. These cars sure have their quirks.

@Phoenix
Sounds all too familiar. Up in the North East, mine runs fine in warm months but goes haywire in the cold. I even reset the Battery Management System after swapping batteries, but still… problems. At least the EVAP fix wasn’t as bad as the coolant issue some others deal with. Fingers crossed mine stays leak-free.

Knock on wood, my 2017 Escape with the 1.5 has been pretty reliable. At 93k now with no major problems or check engine lights. The turbo does leak some oil, but it’s on the to-do list to fix. Usual stuff like oil and brakes have been manageable.

@Alyssa
Oil leaking from the turbo at 93k? Watch out; that’s a sign. The coolant might end up in cylinder three soon. Ford’s “fix” was adding a coolant level sensor so people didn’t realize until they were out of warranty. Keep an eye on the levels, and consider getting rid of it while you can. Also, check the rear suspension. The bushings might be worn out.

Our engine died at 65k. Rear brakes needed replacing twice by then. The coolant leak started, and they just told us to top it off until parts came in—took six months! They screwed up the repairs too: broke parts, routed hoses wrong, and damaged the front axle bolt. By 80k, the rear suspension was toast, but the warranty didn’t cover it. They clearly knew but didn’t bother since we didn’t specifically ask.

Saw that article last night. Feels like Dot just wants clicks, not actual news. I have a similar car with 38k miles, and my mechanic says everything’s fine. Didn’t change the trans fluid yet but did have to add some coolant recently.
