Compression Test - Do Spark Plugs Need to Be Removed One at a Time?

When performing a compression test, is it necessary to remove the spark plugs individually, or can I remove them all at once? Will removing multiple spark plugs cause any loss of compression through the open cylinders?

You can remove all the spark plugs at once. It won’t affect the compression test. Just make sure to test each cylinder one by one with the gauge.

That’s what I thought. Good to confirm though. Thanks!

Yeah, removing them all together doesn’t cause a loss of compression. The test should still give accurate results.

Great, thanks for confirming. I was just making sure I wasn’t missing something.

You’ll be fine either way. The compression gauge only tests the cylinder you’re cranking, so having multiple cylinders open won’t affect the result.

Awesome. I appreciate the reassurance. I’ll proceed with the test.

I’ve always removed all the spark plugs at once without any issues during a compression test. No need to worry about loss of compression through the open holes.

Perfect, looks like I’m on the right track. Thanks!
