Check engine light and a weird noise... then the car shut off. What’s going on?

My car just randomly shut off after the check engine light came on and there was a strange noise. Anyone had something similar happen?

Could it be coolant leaking into the engine?

I thought that issue wasn’t common with the 2.7 engines though?

It’s a Ford… it’s like a feature at this point.

Oh no, that sounds serious. How much could that cost to fix? I checked online and there’s no recall for my engine.

There wouldn’t be a recall, but I think there might’ve been a service bulletin about it.

I’m pretty sure the 2.7 doesn’t have that problem. It’s usually the smaller engines.

Are you in Northern Virginia? I think I’ve seen your car before.

I’m closer to Richmond, so maybe not?

Honestly, spiders are more reliable than some cars.

How many miles are on it?

It’s close to 90,000 miles now.

Sounds like it could be a timing issue.

If you’re lucky, it could just be spark plugs or injectors if you’ve been keeping up with maintenance. Did you notice white smoke or did it go into limp mode?

Coolant leaks don’t happen in the 2.7. That’s more of a 4-cylinder issue.

@Isadore
My 2014 1.5L is one of the models known for those problems, but I’m at 130,000 miles and still going strong.

I didn’t see any smoke or smell anything. It made a strange sound a couple of times, then the engine just shut off.

Was the noise like a whining sound?

Not really whining. It was more of a periodic sound, happening every 10-15 seconds for about 2 seconds each time. I only heard it twice before the engine stopped.

That’s rough. I hope the repairs aren’t too costly.
