Just got a 2024 Escape PHEV and wanted to ask a few things. What do people recommend for floor mats? Any thoughts about the storage near the spare? And any advice for someone new to plug-in hybrids?
Congrats on the new ride! I noticed the same thing about the spot near the spare tire. My guess is it’s meant for an emergency kit. I went with Ford’s mats for the interior and cargo areas. They’re basic but seem durable enough. I just clean them weekly at the car wash, and they still look good.
@Blake
We did something similar when we traded our Model Y for an Escape. I think you’re right about that storage spot being for an emergency kit. I got the Ford mats too. They might feel a bit cheap, but honestly, they hold up well. Weekly cleaning has kept mine in great shape.
I’ve been using TuxMats, and I think they’re great. They look and feel more premium compared to WeatherTech or Husky. Just a heads-up: the footwell in the Escape can collect a lot of water, but I find that better than water spilling over like in my F-150. I keep a shop vac nearby to deal with it.
If this is your first plug-in hybrid, remember that the range indicator is just an estimate. Factors like weather and driving conditions will affect your range, so don’t stress if the numbers seem off. Also, the car isn’t built for highway driving on just the battery. You’ll get the best range during city driving at lower speeds with frequent stops. Try using EV Later mode for highways and EV Now for city driving to get the most out of it.
@Brooke
Are TuxMats easy to clean? I’m leaning towards WeatherTech or Ford mats because they seem easier to wash off. I’m often on construction sites, so muddy boots are a regular thing for me.

I work on construction sites too, and TuxMats are easier to clean than WeatherTech. WeatherTech always looks dusty no matter how you clean it. TuxMats just need a quick rinse to look brand new. The only downside is they’re a bit harder to install and remove, but they cover way more than any WeatherTech mat I’ve seen.
I have the Active X trim, and in my car, there’s a sound system component where that storage area is. Might be different for other trims though.

Here’s a picture of mine. It’s just the sticker on the unit, so not the best angle. link
@Graham
That’s interesting. Wonder why they moved it compared to my 2022 model.

Can you share another pic? I’m curious to see how it looks.

There aren’t separate trims for the PHEV. It’s its own thing now.
@Isaiah
In Europe, we still have three trims: Titanium, ST-Line, and Active. From what I’ve seen, the Escape PHEV looks like it mostly matches the Titanium trim.
That space is usually for the flat tire repair kit, but since you have a spare tire, you don’t need to worry about it.
I recommend getting WeatherTech mats. I use them for every car I own.

I went with WeatherTech too. I liked the Ford cargo mat, but it didn’t have a raised edge, and I’ve had spills in the trunk before. For the floor mats, the Ford ones for the rear are two separate pieces, which made me worry about things slipping through since I have a kid who’s always dropping stuff.
That spot is just extra storage space. I use it to keep some emergency tools and a first-aid kit. You could probably add whatever you need.
