I’m thinking about getting a 2018 or newer F150 and want to know if it’s a good choice. I’m mostly interested in the 5.0 V8. Would love to hear your thoughts.
Great trucks. The 5.0 engines are super solid. Just keep up with your oil changes and you should easily hit 200,000 miles or more. The body is aluminum too, so no rust worries.

I make sure to change my oil every 4,800 miles just to be safe.
I’ve had three of them. Heads up, the 2021 and 2022 models are missing some features because of the chip shortage. If you want power, get the 3.5 EcoBoost, but for reliability, go with the 5.0. It’s a great engine. My company has over 40 of these trucks, and the V8s are always trouble-free. The 3.5s sometimes have issues with the water pump or turbo. I personally like the 3.5 though. As for trims, don’t waste money on a Limited or Platinum. The Lariat is the sweet spot. The XLT is decent if you live in a warm place, but the lack of winter features and leather was a dealbreaker for me.

I agree, Lariat is good, but I really wanted the B&O sound system, LED lights, and cooled seats, which only come with the 502A and higher. When I bought mine, the price difference between a 502A and a Platinum was small, so I went with the Platinum for the better leather and resale value.

My Lariat has all those features and was still $15k cheaper than a Platinum. But maybe the prices are different where you are.

I bought mine used, and back in 2020, the difference was just 1-2k between the 502A and Platinum.
It’s the best-selling truck in America, and the 5.0L V8 Coyote is one of Ford’s most loved engines. So, yeah, you probably can’t go wrong with an F-150.

I’ve got a Toyota right now, but I’ve always wanted an F150.

I traded my Toyota for a 2023 F-150 5.0 and I love it. I have the STX super crew, and it’s super comfy on long trips. I get 23-25 mpg on the highway with 93 octane using stock 20” wheels/tires.

The 3.5L might be a better pick nowadays.

You’re probably right. The 3.5L likely outsells the 5.0L these days. They’ve been reducing the trims that offer the V8, and now, most of the higher trims don’t even have it as an option. But among car fans, the 5.0 Coyote is still more popular than the 3.5L EcoBoost.
Check out Ford tech Makuloco’s videos on the 2018 5.0 F150s. He talks about some ongoing issues with them.

That guy knows his stuff. Lots of good info.
I’ve got a 2018 3.5 EcoBoost and I’m pretty happy with it.

10,000 engine hours and still runs smooth as ever.

If you get one of these trucks, don’t oil undercoat the steel frame, because there’s a part near the fuel tank that can break down. It’s an expensive fix. Also, the 3.5 twin-turbo is a solid engine if everything else about the truck fits what you’re looking for.

What’s oil undercoating?

It’s something people do to prevent rust, especially in places where they use a lot of road salt in the winter. If you’re in a warm place, you don’t need to worry about it.

I’m lucky to live far from any salted roads.
