Anyone else prefer the short wheelbase?

I drive a 2010 Expedition Eddie Bauer. We have four kids and just one car right now. When we buy a second vehicle, it’ll probably be a minivan for my wife. I think the EL or Maxx looks kind of odd, so I went for the short wheelbase (SWB). If I ever need more space, I can just use a roof box or a hitch carrier.

A longer wheelbase usually gives more stability when towing, if that matters to you.

I don’t really tow much, but the SWB actually has a lower tow capacity.

For the Gen 4, it’s 9000 lbs for the MAX vs. 9300 for the SWB with the HD tow package. Honestly, if you need that extra capacity, you might want to look at something other than an Expedition. Without the HD tow package, both are rated for 6000 lbs.

@Tatum
Mine has the tow package rated for 9300, but I don’t think I’ll ever tow anything heavier than a U-Haul trailer.

@Tatum
I towed a 7K travel trailer thousands of miles with the MAX and HD tow package. The EcoBoost and the ten-speed transmission are a great combo. I had a nice weight distribution hitch and the trailer was stable. I personally wouldn’t worry much about the weight on the rear axles, even if it gets heavy. That motor is solid for pulling trailers.

The turning radius on the short wheelbase is amazing. It’s perfect for tight spots and busy areas. But if you need the third row and more cargo space regularly, there’s really no comparison. Both versions can handle 4x8 sheets with all seats down and still have room. I think both versions look good, honestly.

@Lilyharper
When I need more cargo space, I just fold down the third row.

That’s a good way to do it.

The Eddie Bauer trim is only the second-lowest, but it still has a power folding third row, which is pretty cool.
