I’m thinking about getting a 2020 Ford EcoSport with around 30k miles. It has a 2.0L 4-cylinder engine, not the much-talked-about 1.0L 3-cylinder turbo. Are there any major issues I should be aware of? I’ve heard Ford transmissions can be bad. Is that true for the EcoSport? Just need a car that’s reliable and won’t give me a headache with the engine or transmission.
The EcoSport doesn’t share the same transmission as the Ford Focus, which is probably the one with the bad reputation you’re thinking of.

I heard about the transmission issues with the Focus and also about the Escape’s transmission, which I think is somehow related to the EcoSport. The Escape uses the 6F35 transmission, and the EcoSport uses the 6F15. Are they connected?
@Fabian
I think the 2.0L EcoSports actually have the 6F35 transmission. The really problematic ones were dual-clutch models in the Focus, if I remember right.

That’s correct.
I own a 2018 2.0L AWD Titanium with 134,576 miles. It’s been reliable as long as I keep up with maintenance and drive responsibly. Regular maintenance on the transmission is key to avoiding issues. Mine handles off-road and snowy conditions well. You can expect around 28-30mpg if you take care of it. I upgraded mine with a reusable air filter and LED lights. Highly recommend WeatherTech mats too.
@Rose
What’s the recommended schedule for transmission maintenance? My current car says it’s lifetime, but I changed the fluid at 50k miles because that seemed wrong. Would every 50k miles be okay for these Fords? I don’t drive hard either.
@Fabian
I change mine every 10k miles, which is probably overkill, but I do all my own maintenance, so it’s cheap for me. I figure it’s better than needing a full rebuild later on.
@Fabian
Every 30-40k miles is fine for the EcoSport. Changing it every 10k is definitely overdoing it but won’t hurt. For oil changes, stick to full synthetic every 5-7k miles.
Every 50k miles should work fine. That’s what I’ve done.

Can I get that done at the Ford dealership? My dad never taught me much about car maintenance because he thought it was a husband’s job. I’ve been trying to learn more as an adult.
@Fabian
You can. The dealer needs to do it because they have to check or replace the transmission filter.

Actually, the filter in the 6F35 transmission is internal and requires disassembling the transmission to get to it. That’s why the dealer might suggest a rebuild instead of just changing the filter. By the time you need this, the car might not be worth the cost.
I have a 2020 2.0 Titanium. Got it new and now have 97,000 miles. The only issue I’ve had was a purge valve failure, but it’s been great otherwise.

Is that a common problem? Was it expensive to fix?
@Fabian
Not really. I got a discount because I have a family member at a Ford dealership, so they handled it for me.
I just bought a 2019 model with the 1.0L 3-cylinder engine. Did I mess up?

The 1.0L isn’t great, but as long as you keep up with maintenance and don’t push it too hard, it should be okay. Just keep an eye on it.
