Bought it in February of ‘24 from my friend with about 298-299k miles on the original engine. Since then, I’ve put around 20k miles on it. Loaded it up with a rebuilt Subaru short block, STI 6-speed transmission, and rear differential (about 1k pounds of extra weight) in August and drove from Michigan to Florida and back in a weekend to help a friend with a swap. No issues at all!
I always tell my friends here in Australia… Take care of your car, don’t go for a stock auto transmission, and service it regularly. These cars will keep going if you look after them.

The 1.0L Ecoboost does have some problems because of the wet timing belt. Ford is currently facing a lawsuit from drivers who claim they knew about these issues but didn’t do anything. They call it the ‘Ecoboom’ for a reason. Other than that, though, they’re pretty solid cars.

I’m hoping for the best. I’ve got the infamous 1.5L 4-cylinder, the one with the hairline crack between cylinders. I’m really hoping it doesn’t happen to mine. I drive carefully and let it warm up properly. I also try to change the oil yearly and keep an eye on the coolant. I really like my MK3, and the engine is fun to drive. It’s a manual 6-speed with only 112,000 km on it so far, and I paid a lot, so I want to keep it for a while.

That’s a tough spot to be in. I read about an updated block they introduced later on, but I think the only way to tell is by removing the cylinder head.

Yeah, they started using the updated block in 2019. Unfortunately, my 2018 MK3 has the faulty block. I try to drive it carefully when it’s cold and avoid pushing it until it’s warmed up. Hopefully, that’s enough to keep it running, but if not, well, it is what it is.
At first, I thought you swapped an STI engine and transmission into your car! I was like, what?! Nice ride though! Here’s to another 300k miles!

Haha, I got confused too!

Lol, after rereading it, I can see how that could be misunderstood.
You should crosspost this to a Focus forum!
Pre-facelift model >
To clarify, the car isn’t Subaru swapped. After rereading what I wrote, I can see why someone might think that. My bad, I wrote this late at night.

Is it running an EcoBoost engine?

I’m surprised a small petrol engine like that has gone such high mileage.

That’s the highest mileage I’ve ever seen! I’m hoping to get there one day. My ‘13 is at 115k miles, and I’ve owned it for 6 years—80k of those miles are mine.
I’m at 356,000+ miles on a 2.0L Duratec Focus, with a 4-speed automatic. Pre-EcoBoost though.

So, it’s an EcoBoost engine with a Subaru block? Is the block cast iron?

No, sorry for the confusion! I had Subaru parts in the hatch when I drove down to Florida to help a friend with a swap. No Subaru engine in this car, just my writing mistake lol.
