Hi everyone! I’m thinking about getting a 2023 Ford Explorer King Ranch. Are there any common problems I should be aware of? For example, Nissan has those known CVT problems on certain models.
Just to clarify, Denali is a GM trim, not for the Explorer. You’re looking at King Ranch or Limited. Explorers are solid SUVs with no major common issues. Most problems are usually due to poor maintenance by the owner. These engines are turbocharged, so they need to be driven a bit harder sometimes to keep things clear. Extended idling isn’t good for them either. Basic maintenance is key to keeping these running smoothly.

Oops, meant King Ranch! Thanks for pointing that out and for your advice!

No worries! The 3.0 turbo engine is really nice, better balanced and more fuel-efficient than the 3.5 turbo, and it has similar power. Just a heads-up, if you plan to tow often, consider a V8 which Ford doesn’t offer anymore, but GM or Dodge do.
@Ellis
Thanks, but I’m not planning on towing.
Like the other commenter said, any issues with the Explorer are likely due to poor maintenance. Turbo engines need frequent oil changes, and higher octane fuel is usually recommended. People who bash Fords often aren’t taking care of their vehicles. They’ll buy another brand and still neglect maintenance, then blame the car when things go wrong.

I’m pretty good about keeping up with maintenance. I figure if I take care of it, it should take care of me.

I’ve got a ‘20 ST, and it’s got the same engine. Main issues I’ve had were a bad battery (around $240 to replace). Stick to 5K oil changes and rotate the tires while you’re at it. There have been some issues reported in ‘21 and ‘22 models with sensors, transmissions, and rear cameras, so keep that in mind. I’d suggest looking into a Ford Extended Service Plan if you’re planning to keep it long-term. Aside from that, the engine is great, tons of power, and the torque is fantastic.
Stay on top of oil and filter changes. Haven’t heard of too many issues with the newer Explorers.
Only problem we had was the A-pillar trim around the windshield breaking off on a windy day. Found the replacement part on Amazon and fixed it myself.
I’ve heard some reports of transmission issues in newer Explorers, but honestly, I see fewer of them in the shop compared to other models. I drove a 2022-2023 Limited, and while it had some minor shifting quirks, it was still a great drive. I’ve read mixed reviews, but the V6 seems to get the best feedback, so your choice of the King Ranch should be a good one. Good luck with your purchase, and let us know if you get it!

What’s up with the wheels? Are the 21-inch wheels not great?

Bigger wheels like 21-inch make the ride stiffer because there’s less tire to absorb bumps. The newer Explorers already have a stiffer suspension, so the ride can be a bit rough. They look nice, but if comfort is a priority, they might not be the best choice.
Check if the Ford 360 camera recall has been done; otherwise, the dealership won’t sell it. They were supposed to release a fix recently.
