Has anyone had issues like this? Will changing the transmission fluid help or is it a bigger problem like a bad transmission? $500 vs $3500 .
For a Fusion or Focus? That picture looks like a Focus

Yeah, it’s definitely a Focus

It’s actually a Fusion.

This isn’t a Fusion, it’s a Focus. That model of Focus has well-known transmission problems, especially with automatics.

Late or rough shifts are so common with these that it’s often considered normal. The best you can do is just drain and refill the fluid. Don’t flush it. Anything more than that is beyond our usual fixes.
I find that using the paddle shifters seems to reduce the issues a lot, surprisingly.
@Gavin
Okay. So it’s common. At least that’s a bit reassuring. There’s a transmission shop that quoted $325, but if the fluid looks bad after one drain, they do another one for an extra $80…

What’s the year and mileage of your Fusion?
By the way, are you a bot? How did you figure out that’s a Focus and not the Fusion you say you own?
@Harley
It has 180,000 km
180,000 miles? That transmission is pretty much done. You should take it to a shop for a rebuild or replacement.

You should drain and refill every 30,000 miles. Never flush it.
Considering it’s a 2013, I’m betting it hasn’t been done before.

My 2016 has this problem and it’s so annoying
I watched some YouTube videos on how to drain and refill the transmission fluid, and it’s not difficult at all. Harbor Freight has a cheap hand pump I used.
You can try flushing the fluid, but it might not fix anything. These cars are known for transmission issues, and Ford made a mistake by not having a serviceable transmission filter.

NEVER FLUSH! The filters are non-replaceable, and flushing just clogs them and destroys the transmission.
@Simon
Flushing means draining the old fluid and adding new fluid.

The proper term is ‘drain and fill.’ If you say ‘flush,’ it might confuse people into thinking you mean the full machine flush, which is the worst option.
