2013 Ford Escape - To Fix or Sell?

Hi All,

I’m driving a 2013 Ford Escape SEL Sport Utility 4D with a 2.0L EcoBoost engine, 6-speed automatic transmission, 2WD, and 120,000 miles on it. The dealership has recommended several repairs totaling around $2,000, including:

  • Engine Air Filter Replacement
  • Cabin Air Filter Replacement
  • Alignment (4-wheel)
  • Boot - Outer Tie Rod
  • Coolant System Drain and Refill
  • Brake Flush

KBB estimates my car’s value at around $6,000.

I’ve heard mixed opinions about the 2013 Ford Escape’s reliability as it ages, and I’m hesitant to invest about one-third of the car’s value into these repairs. I’m not particularly enthusiastic about cars and would be happy driving this one as long as it makes financial sense. If I do decide to move on, I’m likely to get a Tesla, but I’m content with my current car for now.

From a purely financial standpoint, does it make more sense to invest in the required maintenance and keep driving this car until it no longer runs, or should I consider selling it before potentially sinking more money into repairs? Any advice would be appreciated!

While these repairs might seem like a significant investment, they’re essential for maintaining your Escape’s performance and safety.

If you plan on keeping the car for a while, it’s worth considering the long-term costs of neglecting these repairs.
