2010 Focus coolant leak... Could it be the water pump after replacing the thermostat and housing?

The reservoirs can crack and start leaking on a few of these models. Might be worth checking it out.

I’d guess the work might’ve been done wrong or maybe something else in the cooling system is failing now. A puddle doesn’t help much in figuring it out, though. Best bet is to pour coolant in and see where it leaks out. Otherwise, guessing doesn’t really get you anywhere.

@Callum
The work seemed fine since it lasted for a whole week. This leak is in a different spot now. Just trying to figure out what could leak in that area. Thanks!

Pop the hood, grab a bright flashlight, and look closely for any wet spots. If you can’t spot anything from the top, jack the car up and look underneath. There are many parts in that area, and coolant can travel across different parts before dripping somewhere else.

@Callum
It feels like the leak just keeps moving. First the thermostat housing, then the thermostat, followed by a hose, and now this new spot. I’m leaning towards the water pump but wondering why everything keeps failing.

Try filling it up again and watch to see where the coolant leaks from. Water pumps, heater core hoses, and the reservoir are common causes. If the cooling system was just worked on, check it over thoroughly.

I’d guess the water pump is the issue here.

Is that in the area I’m talking about? I’m not too great with cars haha.

Yeah, from the pictures, it looks like the passenger side. It’s probably the water pump.

Try using a hose or distilled water to pressurize the system and watch for leaks. Once the leak’s fixed, flush the coolant system.

I’ve had a lot of trouble with my coolant system. Had to replace the radiator, coolant outlet (twice), thermostat, hoses, and a bunch of other things. It really depends on where the leak is.

It’s on the front passenger side. The thermostat and hoses seem fine.

@Sophie
Did you pour coolant in and see if it leaks out? And is your overflow tank full or empty?

@Sophie
I think it’s the coolant outlet. It’s a plastic part near the driver’s side under the valve cover. It’s hard to see, but when it fails, coolant sprays everywhere. I had a shop fix mine for a couple hundred.

@Vincent
That part was replaced already, and it’s not the issue. This new leak is in a different spot. I think it’s the water pump now.

Check the hose going into and out of the heater core. It’s usually on the back side of the dashboard, and it’s called the upper hose.

I’m betting it’s the radiator that’s the problem.

So, with the puddle… Does it leak out overnight, or only after driving and parking? If it leaks overnight, it could be something else. But if it stays in, then it only leaks when the system’s under pressure, which points to the water pump. That’s the side where the pump is, so it could be the issue.

@MaryAnn
It doesn’t seem to leak overnight. I parked it at work around 6 AM, and by 2 PM, the puddle had grown that big.
