In that case, it’s likely one of the pulley bearings - alternator, water pump, power steering, or tensioner. You won’t fix this on your own. A mechanic should be able to diagnose the issue without a problem. It might run for a bit, but it could seize unexpectedly and throw the belt off, causing more damage. Speaking of power steering, have you checked the fluid level? The pumps can make a similar whining sound, especially when turning the wheel, but not just idling.
