What’s causing this?

There’s no check engine light, and I’m stuck trying to figure this out…

It sounds like it might spit out a spark plug. Are you having any drivability issues?

No issues while driving, but I hear the sound sometimes after driving on the highway.

My 2018 F150 has been making the same noise for years. No one’s found a problem, even after I got a new transmission.

That sounds like the DI injection pump to me.

Sounds like every 5.4 engine with timing issues.

It sounds like a 5.4 engine when it gets hot, which can cause low oil pressure and make the phasers act up.

Looks like it is a 5.4 from your other comment. And from 2007, no less.

It’s a 2006 5.4 V8.

5.4 engines go brrrrr.

Could be the water pump.

Is your oil fill cap missing?

Nope, it’s on there.

Is this a 5.0?

Could be a cam phaser. Let me know if that’s the case.

It’s that time of year again, your F150 is catching a case of Model T.

It sounds like an exhaust manifold leak.

You might be able to track it down with a mechanic’s stethoscope. Check for any low fluids, and if you can access the spark plugs easily, see if they’re loose or oily under the coil pack.

If you don’t already have an OBDII reader, get a decent one. A good one will pay for itself quickly. It helped me fix a $20 issue that would’ve cost hundreds.
