What happened with your sunroof shattering

As others have mentioned, glass is not covered under warranty, so hopefully you have glass coverage (which is separate from windshield coverage in mandatory states like Florida). This is a known phenomenon and sometimes happens with tempered glass. I learned about this when a used car I bought had a sunroof jammed with glass bits from the previous one popping.

This isn’t strictly a ford issue. It’s a problem with tempered glass in general. It’s often due to imperfections in the glass, coupled with thermal stress, a rock chip, or bending of the frame. It happens. Get it repaired and be on your way.

@Lana
My CRV did this while I was driving. NOTHING hit it. Honda told me to just deal with it.

@Lana
It’s a cold weather issue .

Have you called Ford’s warranty department? Sorry to see this happened to you. Hope you’re all okay?

Ford will tell you to file an insurance claim. At the end of the day, this is a piece of tempered glass on the roof of the car that can be damaged from a number of different environmental factors.

Windows aren’t warranty claims, now if your sunroof tracks or motor breaks. Then yes, it will be covered.

Dirt track legal now?

Same issue when I owned a '06 MDX… shattered 3 times. The common factor was driving on the highway in the cold weather. Acura replaced it every time with no issues. It turned me off sunroofs. If I could, I’d order cars without them. Did so with my current F150 Lariat.

It’s so cold here and I heard my sunroof creak slightly… I kept the high heat off.

Had a Lincoln MKZ with a moonroof for 133k miles and never had any problems with it. Also had a 2008 Taurus with 147k miles and no issues.

I’ve never had an issue with sunroofs, so can’t relate to your problem.

Never heard this was a common issue. My guess would be road debris hit it.

No debris. We were driving by ourselves on the road. I drove my last F-150 for eight years with no issues. There are a lot of F-150s, so statistically speaking, the ones being posted about may be no more common than any other. I’m sharing this in case there is an issue. It has taught me to keep the inside cover closed except when the sunroof is actually open.

Might as well be an expert.

I had a car once. Never had a transmission problem. Had another car. Different car. That one was good, too.

Well that sucks. I’m glad my Fusion doesn’t have a sunroof.

My fusion had one and at 40k miles, never had any problems with it. But then I wondered how I ended up with one anyway.

@Oakland
Dang, you cut a sunroof into your fusion at 40k miles. You must have been the talk of the town.

I love the sunroof on my Taurus. 140k miles and no problems with it other than the occasional drainage block.

I’ve never had an issue with sunroofs, so can’t relate to your problem.

We’ve owned the following Fords with sunroofs: Focus, Escape, two Explorers, F-250, and Mustang (several of those over 8 years). None have had a single sunroof issue or leak. Neither has anyone else I know with a Ford. What vehicles or years are you talking about?
