2018 Transit cargo… Med roof
I’ve been in the UK and had a vehicle with a rain sensor for controlling the auto wipers in a similar setup
If you have any adaptive features like cruise control or headlights, there might be a camera in this unit. It could also house a heater, GPS, WiFi, and possibly cellular if you have Ford Connect. I’m not sure without taking off the cover.
Sounds like a rain sensor to me.
I’ve thought about that too. I like to think of it as the transit’s all-knowing brain… Ford’s first step into AI. Mine doesn’t have sensors, but I like to believe it’s teaching newer transits to be more advanced. Just a theory though.

My 15 had a space for something but nothing was there. My 23 has a camera for lane keep assist and wipers. Yours looks similar to my 23; the 15 still had a rearview mirror up there for the backup camera. If you have a camera, you should see it through the windshield. It’s safe to pop the plastic cover off. I’ve got a dash cam mounted there with the wire running through.
My 17 has rear windows, so it has a mirror here, but nothing like this and no smart tech features.
Mine has the rain sensor, automatic high beams, and collision avoidance cameras mounted in there.
Typical rain sensor, sunlight sensor, and sometimes built-in cameras. The sunlight sensor can manage different systems, like climate control and automatic headlights.
You could also install a video rearview mirror there, in addition to what’s been mentioned.
