I’m eyeing a 2006 GT and could use some advice from fellow Mustang enthusiasts. I came across one that has caught my attention and would love to hear what you think about it.
It’s always great to get a range of opinions before making a decision, especially with a car that’s a bit older. Have any of you had experience with this model? What should I be looking out for? Any insights or thoughts would be really appreciated.
The engines aren’t too bad, but that 5R55S transmission is pretty unreliable. I’d recommend going for a manual transmission instead! The price seems a bit steep to me, but given how crazy the market is right now, it might be the norm.
On the flip side, there are folks with Coyote-powered S197s who are swapping out the MT-82 for the 6R80 due to the frequent issues with the MT-82, especially in modified cars.
I’m fairly certain there’s a 6R80 swap available that fits the 3V. My thinking is that I could find a higher-mileage Coyote engine locally for a similar price. And before anyone raises concerns about reliability or questions if it’s possible, I’m speaking specifically about options available in my area. For reliability, just make sure to have a thorough inspection done by a shop. With used cars, it’s always a bit of a gamble. I’ve seen cars with only 10,000 miles that were in rough shape and others with 200,000 miles that still felt like new. Do your research, shop around, and you’re likely to find a better deal.
Thanks for the accurate info! I was actually considering doing that when I had a turbocharged 2009 3V, as the TR-3650 transmission failed twice on me. I couldn’t quite recall why I didn’t go through with it, but I ended up selling the car a couple of years ago when I was offered more than what I’d paid and invested in it. Now, I’m thinking about eventually getting a used Coyote-powered Mustang, either with a manual or a 6R80 transmission, and adding a turbo. While I grew up around drag racing, I’m also considering diving into autocross. I’ve always wanted a Boss 302, but unfortunately, their prices have gone up quite a bit.
