Thinking of Trading My Model Y for a Mach E. Any Advice?

I’m driving a 2023 Model Y and thinking about switching to a Mustang Mach E. Anything I should know before making the trade? What don’t you like about your Mach E?

Get a smart home charger because Ford has some weird charging issues where your schedule can randomly mess up. The wireless charger is useless. Haven’t tried fast charging yet, but Ford capped the Mach E at 150 kWh, which isn’t great.

I have the Premium with extended range and absolutely love it! My home charger is a Tesla universal one at 9.6 kWh, and I have no issues getting a 90% charge. The lowest I’ve gone is 25%.

PAAK could use some improvements. It breaks every now and then.

@Kendall
Yeah, the wireless charger is pointless. I 3D-printed a tray for an Apple 15W wireless puck, and now it actually works properly.

If you have an LFP battery and start charging below 20%, you’ll see speeds around 150 kW, then it drops to 100-110 kW until about 78%, and then falls to ~30 kW around 80%.

Depreciation is brutal… buy used if you can.

That only matters if you plan on selling in a few years. I usually keep my cars for 10+ years, so depreciation has never been an issue for me.

@Quinn
You’re thinking long-term, but the person who posted this is getting rid of their car in less than two years. That’s a different situation.

A lot of people are moving away from Teslas because of politics. Doesn’t necessarily mean they always swap cars that fast.

@Quinn
Fair point.

The Mach E doesn’t have a heat pump until the 2025 model, so winter range takes a big hit.

Good to know! I’m in Florida, so that’s not a big deal for me.

It also makes the AC a little less efficient.

Not a fan of how Alexa only works for free for three years, then you have to pay. My house is full of smart devices, and I love being able to yell at Alexa in my car too… just don’t want to pay for it when the trial ends.

That aside, this car is seriously fun. My other car is a 2023 CX-5, which is also great, but the Mach E is so quiet and accelerates like crazy.

If you have the Alexa app on your phone, can’t you still use it through the car’s audio?

Yeah, Bluetooth would play whatever my phone is doing. But with the built-in Alexa, I can tell my car to turn off all the house lights or control things without touching my phone. Not a huge deal, just annoying that everything comes with a subscription now.

Check the windows carefully, especially the back one behind the driver’s seat. Mine had deep scratches, like someone scraped a sticker off with a blade. It’s only visible under certain lighting, but others have reported the same issue. Might be a factory or shipping problem.

I’m driving a Mercedes EQA as a loaner right now, and it’s miles better.

Planning to trade in my AWD Premium Mach E once they finally fix the powertrain.

Switched from a 2014 Model S. Repairs were too expensive without a warranty, and there were constant issues. I was considering a Model Y until Elon started doing his thing… so I got a 2024 Mach E Premium Extended three weeks ago.

I love the car so far! It looks great, drives well, and has decent range. But the tech isn’t as advanced as my old Tesla. The Model S was huge, so I’m not sure how it compares to the Model Y, but the Mach E feels a lot smaller. Charging away from home has been frustrating compared to Tesla’s Supercharger network. Also, I live in LA and haven’t found a ‘BlueCruise’ road yet.

Overall, I’m happy, but Tesla still wins on gadgets, storage, and charging.

As a Model 3 owner, there were some things about the Mach E that made me hesitate. First, supercharging. The Mach E takes up two spots at a Tesla Supercharger unless the right stall is free. Charging is also slower.

Also, older Mach E models have a weird power limit—you only get full power for a few seconds. They fixed this in 2024, but in older models, power drops after five seconds. Other EV brands don’t do this.

Storage is another downside. The trunk and frunk are both much smaller than a Tesla’s.

This is a solid comment. People shouldn’t downvote it just because it highlights some of the Mach E’s downsides. This is useful info!

@Samuel
Just a heads-up—the power limit isn’t actually five seconds. It’s hardcoded to 72 mph. An engineer once said ‘about five seconds,’ but that’s just how long it takes to hit 72.
