I’ve got a 2007 F350 with the 6.0 diesel. It’s been a great truck! I’ve owned it for nearly 10 years, and it’s had very few issues. It’s sitting at around 230k miles now. I’ve driven it all over the country, hauling a camper and going through rough logging roads in Oregon. I’ve been considering a newer diesel, but I don’t really want to spend that much, and I don’t think I need that much power or the high maintenance costs. The 7.3 Godzilla seems solid—more horsepower, less torque than my 6.0, and a lot of positive feedback. Anyone here owned both? Would love to hear some real-world experiences.
I’d stick with what’s already paid off. No monthly payments, no worries.
The 7.3 is a solid engine—smooth, powerful, sounds great. But I’ve never gotten better than 11mpg when towing, and I wasn’t pulling more than 7,000 pounds.

That’s surprising! With my 6.0, I usually haul more than I tow. I carry a camper loaded to about 3,000 lbs in the bed, plus wind resistance. The worst I’ve gotten was around 14 mpg, and that was in the mountains pushing it hard.
Been a diesel guy since the ’80s. One of my foremen got a new F250 with the 7.3. He says it has plenty of power but pulling his camper, he can literally see the fuel gauge drop. And his camper isn’t even that heavy—he used to pull it with an F150!
@Jeffrey
The guys I know with the 7.3 gas say it’s great… unless they’re at the fuel pump. But they don’t tow much, just a few camper trips a year, so the gas cost isn’t a big deal for them.

Not true! Mine struggles to pass gas stations AND breweries.

My buddy has a 7.3 gasser and says it stops him every time he tries passing a gun store. Your experience may vary.

I don’t have that problem anymore. Gun stores are rare around here now. Pretty sad.

I think I just found my kind of people!

Just go with the gas. Simpler, cheaper in the long run.
Just got my wife an F350 with the 7.3 gas. She loves it, and it tows what we need just fine. Depends on your use case.
I sold my 2007 F350 dually 6.0 and got a 2022 F350 dually with the 6.7 diesel. It’s a great truck, but Ford is NOT a software company, and you can tell. Honestly, I should have just built up my old 6.0 instead—would have cost less and lasted longer.
@Alex
What would you have done to your 6.0? Mine is running great right now, no complaints, but the interior could use some work. Still rocking the factory head bolts too!

I’m in California, so I can’t delete anything, but I would’ve redone the interior, fresh paint, upgraded the stereo…
