My 2023 lariat ER gave me a scare… why did all these warnings light up?

I had to unplug the 12v battery for 30 seconds to fix the issue, but I’m curious why this even happened

2023 XLT ER here… I faced this too after a week of really cold weather. Left it unplugged and the cold drained the 12v for sure… I jumped my truck and charged it for about thirty minutes. We don’t use alternators, so keeping the truck plugged in when not in use is key. I didn’t practice active battery care for electric vehicles then, but I do now.

@AdamWheels
Wow, maybe it’s just too cold in south Florida right now :joy:

Here’s how I see it… sometimes you need to reboot your phone to get it back to normal. Lightning is just a big computer.

Maybe I fixed my screen too lol… those 3-5 business day waits to change AC settings drive me crazy

@Valentina
Haha I agree, it should be faster. But I suppose we deal with what we have

You should never have to restart an automotive computer… maybe an infotainment screen but not the engine system.

:joy: for real

I’d guess the 12V battery might actually need replacing.

The issue with these trucks is that the onboard DC-DC converter puts out around 13.7v while driving. Due to this, the 12v battery can sulfate over time, sitting at around 70% charge without being fully charged to 14.5v. I’ve seen many trucks here reporting AGM lead acid battery issues in colder spots, plus there’s an old recall for certain production runs with faulty batteries.

Consider getting a LiFePO4 or sodium battery. Ohmmu has great (though pricey) options. Sodium batteries are better in places that experience freezing temperatures. LiFePO4 struggles to charge properly below freezing.

It’s not just a guess… it’s pretty clear! I woke up one morning to a dead 12v. I keep seeing ‘battery saver mode’ pop up and thought it was neat. Turns out, it just means your 12v battery is failing.

@Everett
:joy: true story right there

@Everett
Last week, Ford came to my place to handle updates for some recalls. He replaced the battery and mentioned that needing a new battery on the Lightning every 1-2 years isn’t unusual… I’m in AZ so maybe the heat contributes. Regular car batteries here barely make it two years.

Remember those old computers? You turn it on, and it wouldn’t respond. You’d have to press the big button, wait, then turn it back on? That’s what happened here.

Haha, that’s so true!

Just waiting for that boot beep… beep…

No beep equals reboot

Man, I miss those old floppy drives starting up

You died of dysentery

Mine did something similar recently. It just seemed to fix itself after a few trips that same day.

As I’ve said before, if you’re getting these errors, a slow charge at 10 amps for 24 hours can bring it back to 100%. Sometimes batteries can sit on lots for weeks, draining slowly, needing a gradual charge back up. (Avoid quick charging.) Once you do this, you’ll notice it holds a better charge. Keep in mind, losing a full charge makes it tough to get back. It takes about 12 hours to get from 80% to 100% for your 12v service battery. Damage to AGM batteries happens when voltage dips to 10.5v or around 50% charge. I replaced my 12v service battery two times after low voltage cycles. For the third, I requested a slow charge over 24 hours to guarantee peak charge. Since then, I’ve had no issues with over 7500 miles and 9 months of ownership. Hope this helps.

@Garrett
I use a home charger daily… I’ve owned the truck for a year and a half and I’ve already gone 55k miles.

Wow, that’s a lot of miles! Do you even get to stay home?
