My 2003 Ford Escape isn’t starting properly, any ideas?

I have a 2003 Ford Escape XLT V6 that wasn’t starting, and I initially thought it was the battery, which turned out to be bad. I replaced the battery, but now when I try to start the engine, it turns on but doesn’t fully start at random. Also, when I’m at traffic lights, the engine idles slower and almost comes to a complete stop. The lights also dim when this happens.

Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this?

You might want to start by getting the alternator checked.

It’s making a clicking noise when it doesn’t start. I’m starting to think it’s not getting enough power. Could it be bad wiring?

That’s usually a battery issue, but since you just replaced it, it should be good. Still, it might be the alternator. It could be a bunch of things. My advice: have the alternator checked. Most places do it for free.

I had AutoZone test it at first, and they said the battery and alternator were good. But then I went to another shop, and they showed me that the alternator was actually bad. I also have a friend who’s an electrician and mechanic, and he’s going to test it tomorrow. I’ll update you on what he finds.
