Is turbocharging a 4.6 3V Mustang a good idea? What benefits can I expect?
It’s definitely more affordable than doing a coyote swap
That makes sense
For sure. I’ve been on the lookout for a decent 5.0, but they are just a bit too pricey for me
I see your point.
It’s not completely out of your reach if you consider using the money for the turbo to sell the 3V. You could find a nice 5.0 for about 15 to 20k depending on the mileage
I agree with that. Getting a 3V and turbocharging it isn’t much cheaper than just getting a 5.0 S197 or even a 15-17 S550. Unless the 3V you’re looking at is under 10k, which probably means it has high mileage. It might not be wise to invest in performance mods on a high-mileage car
That sounds like a solid plan
If you’re aiming for the limits of the stock block, go with whatever forced induction kit is easiest to get. Usually, that isn’t a turbo
I would choose a supercharger instead of a turbo. It’s way less complicated. A 3V with low boost around 6-8 psi can still deliver great power and surprise even some strong FBO Gen 1 and 2 Coyotes. I’d only consider a turbo if you plan on upgrading the internals
What do you think about supercharging versus turbocharging?
