Is the MT82 transmission really as bad as people say?

I remember the days when I used to cruise around in my 2006 GT with that smooth 5-speed manual. Those were the times, just me, the open road, and a car that felt like an extension of myself. Now that I’m older and thinking about getting back into a Mustang, the 2017-2019 models have caught my eye. Naturally, I’m leaning toward a manual again, but I can’t help but feel a little hesitant. The internet is flooded with opinions about the MT82 transmission, and not all of them are glowing, to say the least. It’s made me wonder: Is it really that bad? Or are people just being overly critical? I’d love to hear from those who’ve had real experience with it. What’s the truth behind the MT82, should I be worried, or is it all just noise?

I still get locked out of 2nd gear about once a week, even after changing the transmission fluid. The change definitely improved things, it used to happen every day, but it’s still an issue I have to deal with occasionally.

I’m dealing with that same problem right now.

Yeah, I’ve heard that upgrading to a better clutch and flywheel can solve the problem, but I’d rather be certain before dropping a grand on it.

Exactly, that’s where I’m at too. I’ve seen plenty of folks say that investing in a better clutch and flywheel is the way to go, but I’m not keen on shelling out that kind of money unless I’m sure it’s going to solve the problem. It’s a big investment, and I want to be confident that it’ll actually make a difference before I commit.

Has anyone suggested any solutions or fixes for this issue?

I used to have all kinds of strange shifting problems, but things improved significantly once I installed a Blowfish Racing shifter support bracket. After that, the lockouts pretty much vanished, and the random grinding during the 1-2 shift stopped. The shifter felt much better overall, though it’s still not quite on par with a Tremec. Unfortunately, I don’t think you can find these new anymore, but you might be able to snag a used one. I also considered upgrading the clutch and flywheel when it was time to replace my clutch. I hope that works out for you.

Thank you for sharing your real-world experience. It’s great to hear firsthand from someone who’s been through it. I’ve found a Barton for around $200, so it seems worth a shot, especially since I can’t find a Blowfish anywhere.

I’m dealing with the same thing. I upgraded my clutch, but now I’m having issues with the clutch pedal feeling “sticky.” It doesn’t want to come back up, and then suddenly, it just pops back into place.

Removing the assist spring is supposed to fix that issue. Since I took mine out, the pedal has stopped sticking to the floor.

Don’t remove the spring without replacing it. Without it, the clutch won’t fully disengage, which can cause the throw-out bearing to wear out quickly. I had to replace mine three times in just six months.

Mine came without the spring, and when I tried to install a new one, I found that the perch was also missing. So, I couldn’t even fit the new spring. :face_exhaling:
