Is the dealer the only option for flashing my ECU?

I bought a 2010 Ford E150 cargo van and it has a speed limiter set at 68mph. I think this was programmed into the ECU. I heard that flashing the ECU to factory settings will get rid of it. I was quoted $255 for this. Can anyone tell me if the dealer is the only option or if mechanics can do it for less

Are you sure it’s not a MyKey issue? Any shop with a VCM and access to Ford servers or IFS subscription can reprogram your PCM

I don’t think my cargo van has the MyKey system. It’s pretty basic in terms of features and the keys I have are just cut from a simple metal blank. No chip or anything like that on the key itself

@Adam
I can’t say if yours is programmed or not, but 2009 and up E-Series vans have MyKey. An E150 shouldn’t have such a low speed limiter, that was usually for E450 vans and heavy fleet vehicles

  1. This van doesn’t have the MyKey system

  2. FedEx put speed limiters in their vans after 2017. This is a retired FedEx van

@Adam
I don’t see FedEx bothering to take the van to a shop or dealer just to limit speed. If it’s a setting, you might be able to access and change it using ForScan

ForScan and a $25 USB-OBD cable will fix this problem

Sounds like a MyKey issue. I saw that a lot when I worked in used cars. Most of those cars had one key, and 9 out of 10 times it wasn’t the master and was locked to a speed. If you only have one key, you’ll need two more and then it can all be reset

@FordMaster
For background, this van is a retired FedEx van. I’m not familiar with the MyKey system and there’s no sign that my keys (I have two) are embedded with an RFID chip or anything technical. They’re just flat metal blanks stamped with the key pattern. There are no buttons on the steering wheel and no LCD screen on my dashboard, just a green odometer display that can show some simple characters. How do I check if it has MyKey? I really don’t think it does. Here’s a pic of my key. It looks pretty basic like something from 1975:

@Adam
If that’s the case, you don’t have MyKey. But because of that, a dealer can’t reprogram the PCM to remove a speed limiter. The vehicle was built with it. Like someone else mentioned, you may be able to do it yourself with ForScan

@Julia
I read that FedEx added speed limiters to their fleet vans in 2017. Mine is a 2010, so I think the speed limiter might have been added after it was already in service

I doubt they would have added it later. A speed limiter can be an option through Ford for fleet vehicles

@Julia
Couldn’t Ford flash the ECU to a stock E150 firmware that doesn’t include the speed limiter

No, a dealer won’t program a vehicle in any way other than how it came from the factory in most cases. There’s too much liability

Replace your wheels and tires with 24s and you’ll be going faster but the computer won’t know it. Plus you’ll be the envy of everyone at the job site

You can do it with ForScan. Just watch a video on YouTube
