Is it worth buying?

I’ve been looking for a Ranger for a while, and we got a 2010 4L RWD in on trade at the Ford dealership I work at. It’s headed for the scrapyard, but it fires up, sounds great, and drives well. The box mounts and rear bumper are rusted out, which I know is common. The cab corners and cab mounts are still solid, and it looks like it has a new radiator support.

Do you think it’s worth buying? I can probably get it for less than $1,000. I’d hate to see it get scrapped.

Under a grand? Go for it! Worst case, you drive it for a bit and then find a better truck with a bad engine or transmission to swap parts with.

Nothing sounds too concerning, but I’d do the screwdriver test. Jab the frame rails with a screwdriver—if it goes through any rust holes, I’d pass.

On the bright side, since it’s a 2010, it has factory rear disc brakes. That’s a nice perk!

What does the frame look like? If it’s heading to scrap, there’s probably a good reason.

It’s rusty, but it’s mostly surface rust. I checked the frame and didn’t see any holes, though I didn’t get a good look at the crossmembers. The spare isn’t as rusty as I’ve seen on other trucks, so that’s something.

Check the suspension, frame, and rear diff for rust. Look for holes or deep pitting, especially in critical areas. If the rust is manageable, you could probably drive it fine. If it’s just for light use, you can get by with more rust, but if you’re hauling heavy loads or towing, I’d be more cautious.

It sounds like it’s mostly surface rust, which shouldn’t be too bad. Rust expands around 10x its original size, so if you see a flake that’s 1/16th of an inch thick, you’ve only lost about the thickness of a hair.

For under $1,000, I’d grab it. The bed isn’t a big deal—you can find a new or used one for $600 to $800 and swap it out. You might need new brake lines, though.

For that price? I’d buy it.

I sold my ‘04 4.0 RWD with 190k miles for $1,000, and it had rear frame rot. Someone offered me $3,000 for it the next day. Take that how you will.

For under $1,000, it’s worth it even just for parts.

If you can’t weld, have someone else take the bed off, cut the supports out, and weld in new ones. Replace the leaf springs and check the spare tire. For $1,000 or less, it’s a great deal.

Spray the whole undercarriage with Fluid Film.

People pay way more for worse trucks. I’d buy it, especially with the low miles. You could get a few good years out of it, and shackles and mounts aren’t too bad to replace.

A Ford for under $1,000? Do it.

I wouldn’t mess with that much rust personally.
