How to improve gas mileage on my 2002 B3000?

@Alexis
It’s a manual 4x4, but I keep it in 2HI. I’ll check the tire pressures, thanks for the tip!

I get about 19 mpg in my ‘03 with mostly city driving. I’ve done O2 sensors, plugs, wires, and coil packs. If you’re serious about squeezing out more mpg, check out some guides on Ranger forums. Some folks have managed to hit 25 mpg with mods.

Switching to manual locking hubs could save you a bit of gas. It’s about $100-$150, but the downside is you lose push-button 4WD.

You could try a tonneau cover or even removing the tailgate. It won’t make a huge difference, but it might help a little.

I already put on a tonneau cover. It might help slightly, but it does make the truck look cleaner.

After reading through all your comments, it seems like 16 mpg is pretty normal. I’ll work on the plugs, wires, and maybe the PCV valve to see if I can improve it slightly. Thanks, everyone!

Replacing the PCV valve might help a bit. It’s worth a try, and it’s a cheap part to replace.

Keeping your speed under 75 will definitely help. You could also look into switching to manual locking hubs if your truck is 4WD. Beyond that, check your wheel bearings and consider an aftermarket intake and exhaust system.
