How Reliable is the 1999 SVT Cobra?

I’m thinking about getting an SVT Cobra with 80k miles as my first car. I’m a bit worried about its reliability and how it would do for daily driving. How reliable is it? Are there any common issues I should be aware of? Does it handle better than most Mustangs since it has IRS? How can I check if the power recall has been fixed? Anything else I should keep in mind? Thanks

You can check with a dealer using the VIN for the recall info. Aside from that recall, the 4.6L 2V/4V engines are generally very reliable.

Thanks for the advice! I reached out to the SVT number, but they didn’t have any information. I’ll contact a dealer tomorrow. Is getting the recall fixed free? Can I still get it done?

I doubt they’d cover it now since there’s usually a deadline for that. If the car runs fine, I wouldn’t stress about it. The good news is parts are more affordable now, so you might be able to fix it yourself if needed.

For the '99 SVT Cobra, you can look for a Ford modification sticker in the engine bay. That’s another way to check if the fix was done.

Keep an eye out for bad synchros in the transmission, rust, issues with the cooling system, oil leaks, worn suspension parts, and windows that don’t stay on track.

The IRS really makes a noticeable difference compared to the solid axle versions. There should be a sticker for the recall under the hood, probably near the core support. If you can’t find it there, check the door jamb. There isn’t anything too specific to worry about, but do keep in mind that worn bushings and wheel bearings behave differently with the IRS compared to the SRA. The cooling system is a bit unique on the 4V, and if they haven’t serviced it, the plug might be seized. You could try using vise grips to get it loose, but if that doesn’t work, welding a larger nut onto it might be a good backup plan.
