Help with my Ford Focus steering issue… What’s going on?

So, last night I went on a date and suddenly my steering wheel became really hard to turn, like the car was off. I barely stopped on the sidewalk. Now when I turn the car on, it beeps twice and shows a message that translates to a problem with the servo wheel or something like that. It’s a 2009 Ford Focus Caravan 1.6 TDCi. I don’t even know if it has a servo pump or a servo motor, so I really need some advice. I can’t afford to go to a mechanic right now, but I’ll probably go later. Can someone tell me what’s wrong?

You really should go to a shop, we can’t diagnose this just from a picture.

Hey, under the hood there’s a control unit with relays, one of which is for power steering. You should find something called HPS. There’s also another control unit near the passenger side footwell with fuses. Check your manual if you have one and look for the relays and fuses related to power steering. Try swapping the relays and fuses with ones from other systems like the air conditioning to see if it helps.

Nobody can diagnose with just a picture, sorry.

What does the message say in English?

You’re not just a girl, you’re an adult. It’s awesome that you’re taking the initiative to ask for help, but you don’t need to downplay yourself. Take pride in that! Call your local mechanic and see if they can give you an estimate over the phone, then see if a tow company can bring your car in. It could be a power steering pump issue, but it’s really hard to tell without seeing it. It’s rare, but sometimes fragments from a failed pump can mess up the system even more.

They’re trying to call you about your car’s extended warranty.

Haha, so funny…

Try disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery for a few minutes and then reconnect it. If the error keeps showing, try using the OBD2 port for diagnostics.

Sounds like your power steering’s gone out. You’ll need a mechanic for this.

If it was hard to steer, I’m thinking this is a power steering issue. I had the same problem with a 2012 model. The message I got was something like ‘power steering fault’. It was really hard to steer, almost impossible to drive it back onto my driveway. I think you’re probably looking at the same issue.

You need to go to a shop for this. Your power steering pump may have failed or there could be a leak in the system, leaving you with no fluid. Make an appointment and take it to a good mechanic.

It could be the power steering servo. I had a similar issue once with an old pickup. It was a pain to steer. In my case, the belt had gone bad, not the servo.

I believe in you. (But yeah, it should have a power steering pump.)
