Essential towing features... is Pro Trailer Backup worth it?

Looking at models with the Trailer Tow Package — seems like the Integrated Brake Controller is way more important than the Pro Trailer Backup Assist. I’ve never owned a truck or towed anything before… would the backup assist actually help with a small bass boat, or is it more of a gimmick?

Tow/Haul mode makes a big difference — changes how the truck shifts, downshifts automatically when slowing down, and just feels smoother when towing. And definitely get someone to show you how to back up a trailer before you’re at the boat launch. There’s a trick to it.

I’ve got a 2017 and three trailers — ATV trailer, fishing dinghy trailer, and a 28ft travel trailer. Never bothered setting up Pro Trailer Backup.

Tried once, but the stickers didn’t work, and the dealer wanted to charge me for replacements… so I gave up. Honestly, smaller trailers like your boat are harder to back up because they’re so twitchy, but with a little practice in an empty parking lot, you’ll get the hang of it quick.

The brake controller is 1000% the most important feature for towing.

Also, check the yellow sticker inside the driver door — it shows your truck’s cargo capacity. I’d recommend at least 1700 lbs. My F-150 has 1828 lbs with the 7100 GVWR package.

The 360 camera package is nice too, once you get used to it.

@Ford
I’m looking at an F-150 with 6600 GVWR and a Sierra with 7200 GVWR.

Pro Trailer’s kinda pointless unless you’re towing the same trailer all the time. Setup takes a while, and smaller trailers like boats or tent trailers aren’t worth the hassle.

If you’re pulling something bigger like a travel trailer, it’s nice to have — but definitely not a dealbreaker.

Also, heads up — avoid trucks with the Max Tow Package right now. There’s an issue with rear axle bolts snapping. Ford’s replacing axles under warranty, but it’s been happening since 2021 and still no official recall yet.

@Lyonnel
Appreciate the detailed response, thank you!

@Lyonnel
That recall only covers '21-'23 Max Tow axles — the '24 models should be fine.

I use Pro Trailer sometimes, but you still need to know how to back up without it. It’s gotten me into trouble a couple times — the front end can get too close to obstacles if you’re not paying attention.

Plus, if you’re towing a trailer without the setup stickers or one that isn’t calibrated, you’re on your own.

On my 2016, by the time the system found the sticker and was ready, I could already be done backing up manually.

Got a '23 now — we’ll see if it’s any better. It does work when it works though — my wife drove circles around parking lot islands the first time we set it up.
