Developed a compact wireless Android Auto setup

Explain this like I’m 5… what’s the point? I just plug my phone in, and it works. Is there some benefit I’m missing?

I don’t get the obsession with wireless setups either. I just plug my phone in, and it charges really fast. Wireless charging always seems slower to me.

@Tracy
I get that. It’s nice not to have my phone charging all the time just to get maps and music. Long drives especially can heat up the phone a lot.

@Tracy
The built-in USB-C port is decent at 15 watts, but my phone can take 45 watts, so charging is much faster through the 12V adapter.

@Tracy
I always just plug in a short cable. I don’t use Android, but for CarPlay, the sound is better with a wired connection. But hey, whatever works for folks!

Agreed. But, everyone has their own preferences.

@Mohamed

That’s cool. I ended up using an extra phone that stays plugged into the car all the time.

Are you paying for an extra data plan for that? Or do you tether it from your main phone?

@Anna
Nope, the extra line is free, and so was the phone.

Do you charge your phone using the cigarette lighter port? Did you think about adding a wireless charging pad to make it easier?

Yeah, I use the 12V adapter because it charges a lot faster than the built-in USB port. The setup is secure enough right now, but I do plan to add a wireless charging pad at some point. It’s just not a priority since the wired option I have now is more efficient.

@Miles
Got it, thanks for the info!

@Miles
I added a wireless module to mine. Pretty simple to do, and it doesn’t require much work.

I got an Anker USB power bank that can charge wirelessly. My plan was to keep it plugged in down there, so I could just place my phone on it whenever. But my Pixel 8 doesn’t seem to like it; it keeps switching between charging and not charging. Too bad, it would’ve been perfect.

@Barbara
That’s a clever idea, too bad it didn’t work out.

I’m waiting for the AAWireless 2, supposed to come out later this month. I have version 1 in our other car, and it works great. Love that they keep updating the software, so it stays reliable.

Nice! I did a similar thing using a generic 2-in-1 wireless adapter from Amazon, mainly because it had a flat cord. It folds up pretty neatly, and I used the included 3M tape to secure it. The lights are a bit too bright, but they work well when facing down into the cubby.

How quickly does it connect to your phone?

Pretty fast, just a few seconds. I’ve had a couple of minor hiccups, but overall it’s been super reliable.
