Choosing between a 2002 F-150 Lariat and a 2008 Expedition?

I’m currently looking at two old rigs:

  1. 2002 F-150 Lariat - 155k miles, matching canopy, extremely clean
  2. 2008 Expedition Eddie Bauer - 175k miles, new timing chain and cam phasers, new air suspension all around, very clean as well

I’m looking for a rig to occasionally tow my track car and allow me to sleep in the back (while also able to haul various things for my small biz). I only drive 5-6k miles per year. Both seem to fit the bill. Assuming the F-150s plugs are taken care of and knowing the Expy has new cam phasers, which would you trust in the long run?

That Lariat is stunning! But I might be biased because I own a 2003 Lariat myself.

It really is in great condition. The interior is spotless!

I’d go with the Expedition. Extra seats can come in handy, and with them down, you get plenty of room to sleep in the back or haul cargo.

Good point! Though I keep thinking about the 2V vs. 3V debate. As long as the cam phasers are taken care of, there shouldn’t be too much difference.

@Felicity
Good luck making the choice! Hope it works out.

Both of these trucks are tough. My family’s had four Expeditions of that generation, and they all hit over 400k km. We’ve got a few older F-150s too, but they’re a bit more beat up.

I prefer the Expedition, but that’s just my preference. Did you say it has air suspension?

Yeah, the Eddie Bauer trim comes with air suspension bags.

What engines do these have?

One thing to budget for on the pickup is replacing those wheels. Stock rims would look a lot better. Any rust issues?

Both have the 5.4L engine (2V in the F-150 and 3V in the Expedition). And yeah, those rims need to go!

Thankfully, no rust on either.

@Felicity
Just make sure the spark plugs are good. Sounds like you know the drill!

Haha, I read that as a 2008 Expedition Ecoboost!
