Anyone else notice rpm going up and down on cold start?

Feels like the engine keeps revving on its own. Is this normal?

Yeah, mine does the same thing every time it’s cold outside.

It’s pretty common with cold starts, especially in freezing weather. The engine needs to warm up. Just don’t push it too hard when it’s like this, and let it settle before driving.

Totally normal in these temperatures. I’ve been driving in -30 for weeks, and rpm can sit around 1500 until it warms up. If it bugs you, just let it idle for a few minutes before heading out.

I have a 2017 SE and had the same rpm range yesterday when it was freezing. Looks normal to me.

Normal when it’s that cold. Mine goes up to 1500 rpm too. No need to worry.

Yeah, it’s because the engine is warming up. I usually wait until my coolant temp moves off the cold mark before driving so the oil and everything else has time to flow properly.

Am I missing something? I watched the video but didn’t notice any major changes in rpm.

When it’s cold, the engine runs richer until it warms up. My 2016 does this too.

It’s normal when it’s cold. Does it go back down once it’s warmed up?

Usually, but today it took longer to drop.

Same here, though I have a different car. It settles after driving a bit on the highway.

Yep, happens to me too when it’s just idling.

Totally normal, especially in freezing weather like we’ve had recently.

Every car I’ve owned has done this on a cold start. The rpm usually drops after a bit.

Had a similar issue when my fuel pressure sensor was failing. Might be worth checking if it keeps happening.

Replaced mine recently, so it shouldn’t be that.

It’ll stay high until the engine warms up. Nothing unusual about that.

Could also be helping charge the battery faster in this cold weather.

Was your AC on when you started it?
