Anyone else having trouble charging at Tesla chargers that aren’t superchargers… what’s the deal

Has anyone managed to charge at one of these Tesla chargers that aren’t superchargers… every time I try using my adapter I get a charging error message… all the info online seems to be about superchargers so I’m stuck

@Leandro
Thanks a lot for this

You’ll need a NACS to J1772 adapter for any AC charger… I use this one with my MachE… NACS To J1772 | Up to 80A | 20kW | 12 Months Warranty – A2Z EV

Thanks… also your username is great

This is a Tesla AC charger… it could be a Tesla Wall Connector, a Tesla Destination Charger, or maybe a Tesla High-Power Wall Connector… a Tesla-to-CCS SuperCharger adapter won’t work with these AC chargers… that adapter is only for DC fast-charging… but you can charge here with the right adapter… you need a Tesla-to-J1772 adapter to use Tesla AC chargers… these aren’t sold by Ford but you can get them from third parties like TeslaTap, Lectron, and A2Z… the reason is Tesla uses the same connector for both AC and DC charging while Ford has different connectors for AC and DC charging… so you need two adapters… one for DC fast chargers and another for AC slow chargers like the one you’re trying to use… the Tesla-to-J1772 adapters aren’t expensive but make sure to get a reputable brand… some Tesla AC chargers are locked to specific vehicles so if it’s locked you won’t be able to charge

@Nevada
This is really helpful thanks

That’s a destination charger… it needs a different adapter and can be set up by the owner to only work with Tesla vehicles

We had these at my old job and they actually had the adapter built in… you could pull the plug straight out for Tesla or press a button to release the plug with the adapter attached for J1772… I didn’t need to buy an adapter to use it

@Jesse
I’ll check if this is an option thanks

There’s a button inside the pocket where the plug is that releases the built-in adapter

I have a similar model but it comes with a built-in J1772 adapter… there are a few settings that can be adjusted by whoever has access to make it work with non-Tesla cars

This confusion shows why having a separate plug for DC is a good idea… even though I love the size of NACS

Superchargers only

I use this one at home… I don’t use the Ford Tesla adapter because it doesn’t work… that’s only for superchargers… this one is a level 2 charger and needs a $40 adapter to work

As others have said you need a NACS to J1772 adapter… the TeslaTap has a bypass circuit that lets you use Tesla destination chargers even if they’re set to Tesla only mode

Keep in mind these can be set to only charge Teslas… but I have one at home with the Lectron adapter and it works… you’ll know it’s charging when the green lights start flashing in a downward pattern

That’s what we have at home for our level 2 charger… works great

When you say your adapter I assume you mean the Ford Tesla NACS adapter… the instructions say it only works at DC fast chargers… it doesn’t work at AC level 2 chargers… but there are J1772 to NACS adapters that have been around for years so non-Teslas can use Tesla home and destination chargers… they’re usually around $100… just know some Tesla destination chargers are set to only work with Teslas

I’ve been using them for years with AC adapters for Tesla to J1772… I had a Lectron years ago but it was bulky and tricky to use… I upgraded to a Tesla Tap two years ago and it’s much better
